CMBB and Windows 7

Recommended Posts

Yes, CMBB will work with Windows 7. However it is possible to run into some issues. The 1.03 patch (the last free patch for the disc-based copy protection versions) had some issues with Windows Vista and video cards that were DirectX 10 compliant. The problem would result in a constantly repeating/overlapping screen that covered the 3D screen and made the game unplayable.

A third party got involved and modified the CMBB and CMAK code to update some DirectX routines to be compatible with the newer DirectX 10/11 hardware and drivers. However right before the release of the 1.04 patch, Nvidia (and I believe ATI/AMD had the same problem) fixed the problem with their drivers and the 1.03 patched versions worked.

The 1.04 patch is the current version that gets sold if you purchase the game now. the 1.04 patch is also available as a purchasable download to update any 1.03 based games. The 1.04 patch will give you a slight bit of an insurance policy in case Nvidia or ATI/AMD break their drivers again (which does happen every so often).

The other thing to watch out for is UAC (User Account Control). This will typically store your saved games and PBEMs (and possibly new scenarios and ops) into a 'VirtualStore' directory hidden in your User account. So files that are manipulated directly in the '\Program Files' directory will not be seen by the program with UAC enabled. The solution is to either 'Run as administrator' or "turn off UAC", though some people may not like the latter options since it is a security feature.
