AOL 7.0 - I want to host!!!

Recommended Posts

I don't know the intricacies of AOL's service, but you can go to this webpage to find your IP address: What's My IP Address.

You can use this number (during your current dialup session at least) as the host IP address (and you'll need to tell your opponent this number in order to connect to you). However IP Port 7023 needs to be unblocked and I don't know if AOL automatically blocks that Port address or not (or does something else to prevent you from hosting). You may want to look through AOL's tech support pages about playing TCP/IP games and there may be some similiar questions and answers that could help you.

I suggest using the IP address that you get from the website as this is the number that the rest of the world would see. It's quite proabable however that AOL uses NAT (Network Address Translation) where you get assigned an IP address that allows AOL to talk to you and uses a different address for you to talk to the rest of the Internet. So in essence you talk to AOL and AOL talks to the Internet for you and then hands you that information.

It's possible that AOL won't allow you to host. I know in the past that they allowed AOL to be be used a simple ISP without their client software (just a dialer), but I haven't followed what they offer and what they're policies are on game hosting. Usually most companies are worried about server-based games that host a lot of players (which isn't what CM does). However since game servers are often disallowed on many accounts, there's a possibility that CMBO may have a hard time working with AOL if you act as a host.

I can't seem to find any relevant info on AOL's hosting policies. You'll probably need to talk to AOL's technical support via phone. Tell them that your game will be giving out an IP address (hosting) that the client will need direct access to (the client will be talking to a particular IP address which should be your computer) at TCP Port 7023. Most likely AOL's structure isn't going to allow for direct game hosting.
