Delta228
I was wondering if we had any tankers in our midst who could describe what crew members actually say during an engagement sequence. Also if anyone knows any good resources about tank crews or chatter, it would be much appreciated.
tc237
"oh sh*t, traverse left" "where?" "left!, in there, no more left, there it is" "got it" "arm the gun" "UP!" "Fire" "On the Way!" boom
JohnO
Without being funny here, I have FM 3-20.15 Tank Platoon, Feb 2007 and can post the Fire Commands that is suppose to be used, later today or tomorrow.
ShaneO
If you haven't seen the movie The Beast, it's great. It's generally considered to be The tank movie, like Das Boot with submarines. Apparently they went to some lengths to use correct tank procedures - apparently also they didn't get it right all of the time, but it's still good to have some animated context for what you're seeing. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094716/ Which reminds me, it occurred to me while reading a discussion here about canister shot a while ago that "load canister" or whatever the correct command is is probably one of those phrases that is never spoken calmly, like "grenade!".
Flanker15
Loader "SABOT UP!" (the loader has loaded a SABOT shell into the gun) TC "Gunner SABOT TANK!" (I see a tank! shoot a SABOT at it! Slews gun to the target area) TC "FIRE!" (shoot the gun numbnuts!) Gunner "ON THE WAY!" (I shot the gun yay!) TC "SHORT!" (the shell landed in front of the target) TC "RE ENGAGE!" (you suck, shoot again!) Loader "UP!" (loaded the same shell type) Etc, etc...
Delta228
Thanks Flanker, that helps a lot. I'm writing a short story that has some tankers in it, so I want it to feel authentic. ShaneO, thanks, I have never heard of it before, so i plan on renting it.
Flanker15
Here's a couple of vids from Table 8 training with chatter tracks. http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=15637243 http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=15154044 The important line I left out was the gunner says "Identified" when he spots the target in his sights. A couple more http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=LFuMPaByIbk http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ChEbUe9kEw0&feature=related
