missinginreality
I was reading the "drunken shotgun" thread and thought this might be worth bringing up for discussion? "If DO is implemented as planned every Inf Plt Cmdr will be trained and certified to control aircraft and direct strikes as JTACs." from http://www.strategypage.com/militaryforums/10-1785.aspx
SgtMuhammed
That may be but it is one of those pie in the sky statements. It is the same as how every man in an infantry squad is supposed to be able to fire the Javelin. Yes they can do it but the only the guys who practice at it a lot will be really good at it. As a squad leader I recieved training in calling for fire from various systems including air but I didn't get enough practice and advanced training at it to be as good as a true JTAC.
missinginreality
Ah, good to hear the "real world" view of it; thanks Sgt, I guess there's a lot of these ideas that sound good on paper but in reality don't quite work out that way hey.
gexmex
JTACs have usually had some time in the cockpit though, isn't that right? I don't know really, I just heard that somewhere...

Exactly. Training, training, training.
