Peter Cairns
Came across some stuff on Russian 125mm (t-72) and 100mm (BMP-3), canister type rounds. HEF is high explosive fragmentation, HES is high explosive Shrapnel. The HES seems to use an electronic fuse linked to the laser range finder, which sets the detonation range. In addition it is designed to fire some of the fragments forward and is specifically designed to combat helicopters and infantry AT teams like javelin. Anyone know if Syria has these. Peter.
hellfish
Probably not high tech versions, but I think something like 33-50% of the basic load of most Soviet tanks is APERS type rounds. IIRC the purpose was that Soviet tanks were going to spend more time shooting up NATO's rear area than they were shooting at tanks. I think this largely extended to Soviet client states as well, if not due to Soviet doctrine than due to local doctrine, which often saw tanks supporting infantry (be it Israeli, rebel or various militia factions) as opposed to fighting tanks.
