Squatdog
Firstly, the British Army didn't 'take on' anything from the Americans and it was the US Army that copied the British by adopting the FN Minimi and replacing the (truely Godawful) M60 with the FN MAG. The LSW was an abomination, incidently. Traditionally, an 8man section was divided into the 2man GPMG squad and a 6man rifle squad. It was broken down further into pairs, which each man working with his 'Oppo' (opposite number). The basic fire and manuevre was the GPMG supporting the rifle squad with covering fire as it moved forward, then once they had gone firm the GPMG squad would move up to the rifemen's position to provide covering fire as the rifle squad moved forward etc. With the advent of the LMG in the place of the unweildly GPMG, the sections were reorganised into two fireteams; one having the LMG and the other with either a LSW or another LMG.
