Syria's military flatters to deceive

Recommended Posts

Also, a musical language with rhythms and tones and juicy lumps of assonance and onomatopoeia that informs and extends beyond the meaning of the actual words... so the sound of "flatters to deceive" sort tells us what is meant with some initial fluttering and blustering then wimps out in a sort of stifled sneeze.

It's also one good reason to hate the language
Then try another...

I know people that make up stuff like this and don't even realize they are making it up
Coinage and original prose should not be belittled - it is what keeps English, and any other language for that matter alive and vibrant.

When there are pretty much no rules, how does one know they are breaking them?
Umm... English grammar? It may be complex - but it certainly has rules - and the grey areas are covered by the likes of Fowler (Common English Usage).

cassh,

Sure, but tell that to the French smile.gif The fluidity of change does have its downsides, especially for non-native speakers. The English language already has 2x as many words as its closest rival, German, which itself has 2x as many as its closest rival (French IIRC). The others are way, way down. Where the other languages stumble is on grammar. This is one hidden reason why it is difficult for adult English speakers to learn other languages and relatively easier the other way around. But, like I said, mastery of English is generally more difficult due to the vocabulary.

Yeah, that's what I am talking about. English has such strict rules of grammer that they need to have a whole book dedicated to exceptions. Remember to think different! tongue.gif
