Any way to edit the campaigns?

Hi guys,

I'm new to the PC adaptation and I'm enjoying it quite a bit. The dogfights are fun, but I prefer the idea of the campaigns.

One thing I dont like about the campaigns is all of the uber-pilots assigned to them. Guys that have 4-5 Horsepower and 8+ Performance really take away the most interesting aspects of the game IMO. I prefer the lower level pilots who have to scrape and scrabble for every card to these guys with their never-ending supplies of cards.

So, I'd like to be able to play some campaigns where I can set the pilots to lower level guys and not have to play with all of the 200+ experience guys. I dont mind my pilots working their way up in the campaigns, but starting with guys who have all of the bells and whistles just sucks the fun out for me.

Any way to do it? Any plans to allow it? Any campaigns that dont have a ton of these uber-pilots in them?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Joe !

I second this motion.

Don't get me wrong - I LOVE the campaigns and can really appreciate the hard work that went into them, but I would estimate that almost half the pilots have over 100 XP with associated goodies! Some campagins with significantly fewer uber-pilots would be appreciated.

Better yet if you actually get to GROW these same pilots THROUGH several campaigns!

Currently, there is no way to design your own campaigns, but that's something we could consider in the future. A frequent request is to be able to play campaign games offline, and a campaign designer would fit within that pretty well, I think.

As far as the existing and upcoming campaigns, Sixxkiller is the chief campaign designer, so I'm sure he can describe what his methodology is for assigning pilot skills.

Hi guys,

Well I actually prefer to have pilots with a few skills because its easier for me to balance, escpecially in the later rounds. smile.gif A few uber-pilots makes it quite a bit more realistic as there wasnt that many balanced dogfights in WWII. What I mean is there was usually one side that had a distinct advantage, outside of maybe 1943 in the Pacific until the Japanese had exausted their supply of vetern pilots.

Also if you play these campaigns you will notice that once fatigued, its super hard to shoot down bombers after a few turns. This becomes a problem ESPECIALLY with the Japanese (and everyone knows my love of them in this game) and thier airframes being quite a bit smaller.

I tend to shoot for a "point value" and not a specific amont of skills. Believe it or not but a 2 skill pilot can still shoot down an 8 skill pilot, especially an 8 skill pilot who is fatigued. It doesnt happen a lot but i try to keep it in the realm of possibility.

I will tell you that this will become less of a problem as there is a new skill coming to help with the airframe problem. A few of the upcoming campaigns have pilots with minimal skills. smile.gif

Thanks for the replies guys.

I would comment that I dont believe there were any elite pilots in the card game version of the campaigns or am I not remembering correctly. When we play them back then it felt more like proper resource allocation and usage of aircraft more than trying to make sure the right uber-pilot was in the right place at the right time.

As to the bombers, I think they are far far far too deadly as is. When doing basic intercept/escort missions with more standard pilots I see no need for fighters at all. The bombers wreck the fighters much more efficiently than opposing fighters do IME.

So, if you need to have elite pilots just to shoot down bombers then I'd submit that there is something wrong with the fighter to bomber interactions. Perhaps increasing the number of 'dead' cards in the bomber deck might be in order? They draw a lot more card in a turn than any normal pilot can so those cards shouldnt be deadly.

Anyways, I guess for the record I think the campaigns should be more about resource allocation than about playing of the elite pilots. These campaigns are supposed to be indicative of larger air actions being fought throughout the region and its hard to get that feeling when the deciding factor is the skill of the ace uber pilots who would have made up a VERY small percentage of the combatants.

Thanks again for your replies!

Guest Mike

You dont' need to have elite pilots - you need to have unfatigued pilots - so campaigns become a lot about managing fatigue as well as managing targets and a/c.

A campaign editor would be wonderful - that way Sixxkiller wouldn't complain so much!! ;)
