Ability To Play Campaigns Offline & Design Your Own

I ordered this game without reading the fine print. I suppose that's my fault, but when I saw the simplicity of the game play and graphics, I did not suspect I would have to be connected to the internet to enjoy the best aspects of the game. Which in my opinion have to be the Campaigns. Unless one chooses to play a human opponent, you should be able to play the campaigns against the computer AI without the need of connecting to a server. After all this isn't Battlefield 2. I have a dial up connection, why should I have to tie up my phone line to play this, if you ask me or you don't, that's a major design flaw. I might have passed on paying $43 bucks for this had I known about the must use internet clause. And before anyone says get in the 21st century and purchase a broadband connection, again, it shouldn't be neccessary for such a graphically simplistic pc game. I haven't got the game yet, it should be coming in the mail any day now, so maybe I'm complaining prematurely, but I don't see it that way. Also, it looks as if it would've been quite simple to design your own campaigns if the designer had stopped to think of putting a design your own campaign editor into the game. Doesn't everyone see that DIF screams for that? I mean how tough would it be to design those simple looking maps, choose whatever planes and missions you want etc.{From a larger library of planes to choose from then there are currently}. Then you'd have a great game with lots of replay value! redface.gif

The ability to play local campaign games is definitely on our list of things that we want to do in future enhancements, although I can't give you a specific date for when that will happen.

Including a campaign designer isn't something I had considered, but is a good idea. We have kind of a crude designer for the online campaigns, but it would need to be improved to make it usable for general consumption.

I vaugely recall having to use a phone to connect to the internet. I think it started with a 300 baud modem to connect to bbs's. A phone to connect to the internet and then modem became obsolete years ago if I recall correctly....

DiF screams fro lots of things - trouble is there's only a couple of guys actuaslly making them for limited financial return - I'm sure they'd go fater if someone could front up with lots of cash for them to do so!! smile.gif

Richenbacher,

As Brian kind of stated, there is A LOT they want to put in this game. I do know that the offline campaign is one of them. I am not sure you know that this game is a work in progress and these guys have real jobs and families. With that said, they work very hard and there is a lot more coming.

And you are right the campaigns are the best part by far. I also would like for there to be an editor for you guys to make campaigns. Its actually really easy to make them but hard as hell to balance them, especially when there are changes to the system and game mechanics. There are 2 more coming soon with another on the horizon that will be like a game in its own right with hopefully a few new things. Then the expansion pack will have maybe 8-10 more campaigns and new stuff.

Having dial up is ok to play online. The best way to play them is vs a human anyway.

I hope you will maybe change your mind a bit, it still is a great $43 game.

Sixx, I gotta tell ya, I just got this game today, and I'm having more problems than it sounds like the rest of you are havin, but I've read in the forums of server problems, and for me, its nothing but frustration so far. First, downloading the updates literally tied up my 56k (standard for dial up) modem connection to the internet for about 5 hours! You spoke as if you used dial up. Did it take you that kind of time to download a few added planes and campaign updates? Each gif. file for each new plane painfully downloading from what must be Battlefront's server powered by molasses. But the worst part!!! When I go into the DIF portal to play campaigns, it sets them up for me when I use the 'preview' and 'execute' commands, but HOW DO YOU GET INTO THE ACTUAL BATTLE ACTION??? AAAAAARRRGGGHH! Hitting execute over and over just shows results of an imaginary battle that I never get to partake in!!! If you need further proof, just look at the f****** up score of my Dunkirk campaign of yesterday. 4 pts to 4 - A Draw? Look at all the other Dunkirk campaigns surrounding it that look like real local games actually took place. That's the only part of this game that appears to be working right so far for me. Local games that don't require the net connection. Pass this along to whoever has a clue about a patch or a fix. I think I want a refund.

To play hte campaign you have to go back to the "Briefing Room", and seselct play a campaign game - ctrl-p - it then lists any campaigns that have outstanding games and you choose which to play.

It is actually in the manual.......

You have to play the games in each move in the order the computer gives them to you too, but that really doesn't matter much.

Hi all. smile.gif Yes to a campaign editor. That would be super cool. I would like to be able to play campaigns offline also. All I can say is get cable. It is worth the money. Maybe a six pack of GOOD Beer extra a month over dial up. I would NEVER go back to dial up. My blood pressure has been much lower since than. ;)

Richenbacher,

Well I am not trying to rile you up or anything but dial up is fine to "play" the game as the info going accross isnt that big, but yes the downloads are rather huge. I have a college ethernet so I do not dial up, nor would I ever even search the internet again on dial up.

And I think no matter what game you play that you need to update will most certainly be bigger than 4-10mb. You mentioned BF2 which I have never played but I am sure its rather large to update.

And campaigns have a wide variety of scoring. Even the best are having a harder time lately winning, especially the newer campaigns. They must have been designed by a genius! :D

But hang in there.

AFAIK they're designed by the same guy as did a lot of the earlier ones aren't they? Only now he's got better help!! :D
