Random Sub placement

Recommended Posts

I had this idea, if the axis had random sub placement so each game the subs would be placed in the Atlantic randomly.

If this was the case in SC I the allies could not so quickly and easily hunt them down because they know where they are starting. Then the British Navy would truly have to concentrate on finding German subs.

Just a thought.

Curry, you're still thinking SC1. Since Germany really didn't have subs deployed in the Atlantic in September 1939 and the larger SC2 map and run-silent mode will allow breakouts via the North Sea, I doubt if this is going to be "needed."

On the other hand, there are later scenarios where Axis and Allied naval units may be deployed at sea. If we could get a scenario start feature where such units are randomly displaced a couple of tiles, that would be nice.

Subs need to cost less. In SC1, it was basicly impossible for Germany to afford to buy a Sub since it was far less effective for the money then any land or air unit, plus the subs should be used in groups of atleast 2-3 to be most effective if you plan on killing any enemy ships, which is important when stoping U.S. troops from crossing to england, etc.

Also, the effect of subs vs. the MPPs (convoys) should increase with the amount of subs you have in the routes. With a max cap of course, but atleast this way you can actually see a use for buying more then 1 or 2 subs in a game.

Run silent mode is just a term for being passive rather than active convoy raiding. Basically it's a doctrinal toggle between offensive and defensive postures to give players a choice.

As for cost, subs could be less. And to prevent massive amounts of cheap subs, there's always the optional force pool limits. These things are all editable.

Question: Will SC2 have an improved Naval AI for 1) using subs, 2) finding subs and 3) dealing with a submarine blockade of the atlantic?

1. In SC1 German AI subs always headed for the same location. Italian AI subs never interdicted merchant shipping, even when there were no Allied ships in the med.

2. Allied AI was not good at hunting down subs.

3. Allied AI could never recover if Axis built a submarine blockade in the Atlantic.
