Computer upgrade - cards to avoid?

On the PC I would suggest avoiding ATI-based video cards. Their one glaring problem is lack of fog (on the PC - on the Mac this isn't a problem), otherwise they run fine.

The Voodoo line has had some occasional problems. Since 3dfx has been purchased by NVidia, future driver support is a bit questionable. NVidia has claimed that they'll perform some maintenance updates for the Voodoo 4/5 series, but that remains to be seen.

NVidia-based video cards (TNT2, GeForce, etc.) seem to be the best bet, but they aren't exactly problem-free either. For most users they perform fine, but some people do have problems. NVidia also seems to be constantly releasing drivers (though the latest "betas" aren't always posted at their site), so if they haven't fixed a problem there's a chance that they may get to it.
