Sgt. Steiner Posted November 18, 2002 Share Posted November 18, 2002 Yes, those were the infamous mine birds. The Soviets trained pigeons to carry 1/4 stick of dynamite with a contact fuse. Unfortunately, the idea didn't work out too well in practice, as the pigeons kept flying back to their handlers' cages. Finally, a couple of the pigeons came back and landed on a couple of commissar's heads, at which point Stalin ordered all the birds (and the inventor of the idea) shot...
