CM2 Installation Problems

Recommended Posts

Being a big fan of the Close Combat games and looking for something rather more substantial I recently purchased a copy of Combat Mission 2 - Barbarossa to Berlin and am having problems getting it to run properly. I bought my copy through a seller on Amazon.co.uk who advertised it as 'New' (I've had problems with second hand games I've through Amazon in the past, especially regarding those that have been patched, so now only buy new games) and subsequently paid more for it.

Upon receipt I installed the game with no problems and spent the evening played it with my son (okay, I was mostly playing it) without any sound or graphic glitches et cetera that I could detect. We even used the scenario editor to knock together an impressive battlefield! At bedtime I exited the game, removed the disc, and turned my computer off as usual.

When I loaded the disc the next day and I immediately noticed something was wrong - firstly the game didn't start and everything on the desktop had slowed right down (folders were taking 30 seconds to open after being selected and so forth). When I double-clicked the desktop shortcut to the game a blue windows dialogue box appeared proclaiming:

'Initializing Wise Installation Wizard'.

Then the screen went black and another box appeared entitled:

'Installation already present',

the text of which read:

'Combat Mission 2 is already installed. You have the choice between playing Combat Mission 2 or re-installing it.'

The option to either 'Re-install', 'Play' or 'Cancel' is then given.

If you choose 'Play' another dialogue box appears entitled

'C:\PROGRA~I\COMBAT~I\XXXXX'

the text of which read:

'Windows cannot find 'C:\PROGRA~I\COMBAT~I\XXXXX'. Make sure you have typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the start button and then click search.'

When 'OK' is selected a further box appears entitled 'Error' which reads: 'Could not execute the external program 'C:\PROGRA~I\COMBAT~I\XXXXX'

Thinking the game might be second-hand after all (it wasn't plastic-sealed, but smells/feels kosher) and it could be a problem with it already being patched I downloaded the European 1.01, 1.02 and 1.03 patches which all installed successfully. This had no effect, however.

I uninstalled the game, reinstalled it and it played fine again until I exited, removed the disc and turned the computer off. The next day when I went to play again, however, the exactly same scenario as described above occurred and has occurred both times since I have uninstalled the game, reinstalled it and then shut the computer off.

Can anybody help me? This is great game and I'm aching to play it properly, but I'd hate to have to shell out for another copy...

I should've probably mentioned that to start with:

OS: Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005

Graphics Controller: PCI Express x16 - ATI Radeon X600 SE - 256 MB

RAM: 512 MB (installed)

Hard Drive: 200 GB

Processor: Intel Pentium 4 630 / 3 GHz

Again, any help would be much appreciated.

Welcome,

1st - don't panic.

I too have a PC with XP on it, & I get the same message each time I put the CMBB disk into the CD drive.

I think you've got these messages because the CD disk drive is set to autorun.

Your message shows you have already installed CMBB on the pc, so, I would advise the following ...

A) Check out where the programme is on your hard drive by opening windows explorer(usually program files folder).

You can do this by right clicking with the cursor over the "start" button on your desktop. Choose "explore".

B) Once you've found it (should be somewhere like C:\ program files\ combat mission 2), I'd create a shortcut & put it on your desktop. This means you don't have to go searching for the file to launch the game from the hard drive next time you switch on.

C) Now, when you fancy a game, pop in the CMBB CD. The CD drive disk will autorun & up pops the message you've seen before. Select cancel.

Another screen pops up asking you to resume or exit set up. Choose exit set up.

Leave the CD in the drive (like you're ever gonna take it out - ever

;) )

D) Now, if you have the short cut on your desktop, click on it to start the game. The disk needs to stay in the drive whilst the game starts up, but all the necessary files are on your hard drive, & the programme will run from there.

Hope this helps!

Happy ostfront gaming!

Hi Uncle Tgt

Have downloaded your new mystery vehicle mods from CMMODS and they look great, especially the Late War German versions. And I really like the Russians in blue/green. Going to use these but I am going to stick with my 'ethereal Russian winter tank' - I like it's ghostly quality. Just really pleased that we can have 'winter' mods of this sound contact.

This game never ceases to amaze me!

Thanks
