The Churchill is an interesting tank. Lots of armour but a week gun. Slow moving, but a fast turret. I've seen the later Churchills (with 152mm frontal armour) shrug of Panther hits at over 500m. I prefer to use the Churchill VIII with the 95mm Close support gun. It's thick armour makes it very useful for close in work. The 75mm version uses the same gun as the Sherman. However it suffers in the AT role as it is too slow avoid Panther and Tigers, which will eat it for Breakfast.

In my opinion, an overrated tank. Their armor is thick, yeah, but with no slope, it's only a matter of time before they get killed by Panthers or tigers. Besides, every time a round hits, the interior armor flakes.

With a 75mm gun, they can't go head to head against anything bigger than a Pz IV. And you can't use them to flank the enemy, because it would take all weak. They are very vulerable to flanking fire, because they take a long time to rotate their hull toward a flanking enemy.

In the infantry suppor role, Shermans or Cromwells are generally superior, for the simple reason that they cost less.

By far the best Chruch is the AVRE. The big hollowcharge round will go through any armor, if you can get close enough. They can also take out pillboxes from the side, a unique trait.

But if somehow my skiff goes down, I'll freeze to death before I drown.

I think the Churcill is a great tank its armour I find to be good enough for most threats and it can draw lots of fire, which is good if you have more vulnerable units.

Its great in close support and this is shown with the excellent variants, AVRE, Corc and 95mm. If you need to take a village or town where inf are dug in and crawling all over the place there is nothing better than a Churcill. The AVRE I think is a little too specialised, its gun will never get close to any tank that needs such pent power, and even then its inaccurate sometimes.

Regarding tank hunting its not the best, I was under the impression though it normally came kitted out with 5+ HollowCharge rounds which have excellent pent power. This can stick it up the boche somewhat, although I think everyone knows its not really there to be used against tanks and use it as an anti-inf/light unit

Yeah, but so what? If you were modelling the battle of Kursk it might be problem. I think a better question to ask is how closely does Combat Mission simulate Allied tactical doctrine? American doctrine was to leave tank killing to the tank destroyers (M10s, etc.) and that tanks were to exploit, or support the infantry. Perhaps someone can expand on that and include the British view on things.

I think one wants to be careful not to overemphasize the role of armour, whether on the battlefield or in a game like Combat Mission. I really like that armour specs, cam jobs etc. are insanely detailed, but the nitty gritty of ground warfare is how well you handle and support your infantry (which includes fighting your tanks intelligently). If the focus of Combat Mission was truly armour, you would be able to buy them in troops and squadrons (platoons/companies) and there would be more severe command/control issues with regards to them.

If anyone really feels the need to go head on head with a squadron of Churchills against King Tigers or Panthers, go ahead, but I can't imagine any such thing ever actually occurring.
