NEW HISTORICAL OPERATION: "29 LET'S GO!"

Recommended Posts

Here's is a new historical operation for all you hardcores out there. Its a nightmare in the hedgerows, based on the official unit history of the 29th Infantry Division and related sources (I just received copies of ORIGINAL unit histories in the mail...1st Infantry, 101st Airborne, 28th Infantry, 99th Infantry, etc. ... treasure trove of scenarios to follow!). Anyway, its called:

29 LETS GO!

The Battle of Martinville Ridge

East of St. Lo, July 12, 1944

Assault Operation: 6 Battles/20 turns each.

The 29th Infantry Division is well-known for its bloody debut on Omaha Beach. Almost as remarkable is its immediate recovery from its losses and its subsequent attack out of the beachhead and towards St. Lo. For weeks, the 29th men, known as the "Stonewallers", engaged in furious fighting in the notorious hedgerow country, with its ultimate objective the town called "St. Lo." Initially facing the regular army troops of the 352nd Infantry Division, the Stonewallers soon had their hands full with the paratroopers of the 3rd Fallschirmjager Division, the only fully formed German parachute division in Northwest Europe, which had marched 190 miles from its encampment in the mountains of Western Brittany to St. Lo.

The American's objective is to seize the town of "Martinville", located on the westernmost portion of the ridge which bears its name. The ridge juts westward towards St. Lo. Once Martinville is seized, it should be a comparatively simple march to St. Lo. Unfortunately for the Americans, they are opposing a crack unit which has the combat power of two standard German divisions, and has more than 2,000 men than the 29th. Also, it is specifically trained for defense and has eleven times as many machine guns.

Historical and Design Notes:

1. This game is "tournament" saved.

2. There are no night turns.

3. You might find it unusual that the Americans are attacking from the East. This is historically correct.

4. It is recommended that you play as American with "default setup" on. Don't allow the computer German player to set up on its own.

5. This operation looks great with Magua's Normandy mod.

6. "29 Lets Go!" is the motto of the 29th Infantry Division, and its also the title of the official unit history.

7. This operation is also a good candidate for two-player play, and appears well-balanced despite its historical accuracy.

8. Since Norman weather is notoriously "unpredictable", the weather is considered "mixed."

9. Historically, this portion of the battle raged over a six hour period. Thus, six battles have been assigned of "twenty minutes" each, which takes into account reasonable periods of inactivity.

10. All Historical names are marked with an asterisk (*).

11. More historical notes in each sides' briefing.
