While doing the research on this British vs Israeli (Irgun and Haganah) engagement I came across the forces that constituted the Arab defenders. The British were trying to maintain the mandate/peace and keep both sides separated.

City defenders

Jaffa defenders were made up from of a combination forces as follows:

1. Arab Liberation Army headed by 'Abdel Nijim al-Din and Michael al-'Issa (Palestinian Christian from Jaffa).

2. Local Palestinian volunteers.

3. 50 Yugoslavian Muslim Mujahideens who volunteered to defend the city.

4. Many Palestinian Germans from the German colonies near Jaffa and some Italian volunteers.

I wasn't aware of the German colonies in Palestine.

Well yes, there were few German colonies in Palestine, the settelers were German templers. before and while the WW2 they found out as Nazi supporters and i think that the British expeled them.

The 1948 sources seem to think they were still there, at least they took up arms and fought with the Arabs in '48.

The Jaffa battle will be ready in a week or so.
