Schrullenhaft
What Windows version are you running ? Have you upgraded or patched Internet Explorer ? Has any program you installed recently installed it's own Java version ? As a first step you can go to the Start Menu > Settings > Control Panel > Internet Options control panel > General tab > under the 'Temporary Internet files' section you can click on Delete Files and check 'Delete all offline content' and OK. You can also delete your Cookies too (which should force you to re-login to any site that uses cookies for automated logins. I have no idea if any of this would be stored as temporary files, but it may be worth it to clean out the cache. However you may have already tried this since you've checked the security settings for Java. The next thing to do is to go back to the Internet Options control panel and under the Advanced tab go to the 'Microsoft VM' section and make sure that 'JIT compiler for virtual machine enabled' is checked. You can also click on 'Restore Defaults' which may work. Under the Security tab you can make sure that the Internet Zone is set to a 'Default Level' which may work with most Java applets.
