Strange CD problem

Recommended Posts

9 times out of 10, my DVD ROM will not detect the CM:BB CD. The drive will run-grunt-sputter-run for a minute or two when I close the tray....then ....nothing. If I double click on the drive icon, it'll say, "insert CD" (once in a blue moon the computer will recognise it and the game will play with no problems).

I'll then pop out CM:BB and replace with my Warcraft CD or another game and there won't be a problem. Then I'll take that game out, put in CM:BB, then sputter-sputter-cough-cough....and nothing.

However, if I take the CM:BB to work and put the CD my workstation, everything works fine. No problem whatsoever.

Both computers have the OS (WinXP).

The CD is not dirty and is does not appear to damaged.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Which version of CMBB do you have, the BFC/Internet one or the CDV/retail one (which includes just about any version purchased from a retail store) ?

The CDV/retail versions have a copy protection mechanism called SafeDisc. Part of the basis for its copy protection is intentionally written bad sectors on the disc. It's possible that your DVD drive has a problem with SafeDisc.

One thing to try is to disable any anti-virus protection or other CD/DVD utilities you may have running just in case they may be causing interference with reading the CM disc (even though WarCraft reads without problem).

You may want to check the DVD drive manufacturer's website to see if there is a firmware update that may help with this issue (if you're extremely lucky).

Many thanks for the reply Schrullenhaft.

I have the BFC version.

My anit-virus is and was disabled.

I have no DVD utilities running that I know of.

I flashed the DVDROM with an updated firmware but the problem still is here.

I visited the DVDROM mfg. forum to investigate similar problems and found nothing.

The DVDROM is an "On-Lite DVD-ROM Drive SOHD-167T.

Any other ideas?

I suggest booting into Safe Mode and see if that helps or not.

I looked at the LiteOn site, but didn't find your drive listed in the firmware downloads. This was a good article on the SOHD-167T. This testing seems to indicate that even if you did have the CDV version with SafeDisc encoding it should have worked. The latest firmware appears to be v. 9S19 (this may have been where you downloaded it already).

Hopefully the boot into SafeMode will work, if not I'm not sure why it will read on one drive and not another. If worse comes to worse you can possibly contact sales@battlefront.com and see if they'll exchange discs with you.

I had forgotten to say that I had tried booting into safemode. I couldn't read CM:BB but my trusty Warcraft did.

I'll try to mess around with it Friday night and see what happens. If I find anything relavent, I'll post it.

Once again, thanks for the helping hand.
