istari
Just pricing out a new high-end system to play Far Cry and Half-Life 2, and trying to decide between the Nvidia Ultra 6800 and the Radeon X800 XT. Seems like the X800 has a slight performance edge over the Ultra 6800, but I still love to play CMBB, and will get into CMAK soon. Having a 9700 Pro currently, I miss the old fog effects, and would dearly like to have them back for CMAK. So... anyone know if we're still stuck re: fog, even with the latest X800 card? Conversely, will the Ultra 6800 support fog? Thanks! CJ
Schrullenhaft
To my knowledge the X800 will still lack the fog-table effects in CM. ATI has decided not to support fog-tables in DirectX(3D) at the driver level. Fog has been available on the Mac under QuickDraw RAVE 3D for the same Radeon cards that it isn't available on the PC. I believe that the Ultra 6800 should still support fog-table effects in CM. You'll have to wait for CMx2 for fog effects on the ATI Radeons since it will most likely be written in OpenGL (and possibly support different ways of generating fog).
istari
OK - that's what I was afraid of, but thanks for the reply. (Sigh) The X800 is faster than the Ultra 6800 and much easier on the power supply, but that fog sure adds alot to the virtual battlefield.
