Good Lord, I get 20 of these kinds of emails every day, sometimes from emails I recognize, usually I don't. This is nothing new and has nothing to do with CMMODS, email addresses can be harvested automatically and then thrown back out into cyberspace in spoofed emails. I hope Gates' prediction about spam was correct but am not holding my breath. In the meantime, don't open attachments from emails that aren't obviously specifically addressed to you, or haven't been requested by you, even if coming from an email address you recognize.
