Philippe
The most common form of on-line play these days seems to be PBEM. Some don't like it because it is a bit slow and stately, but if you line up an opponent or two and schedule a block of about six hours when you'll all be at your computers, you can play two or three games simultaneously and there will almost always be an e-mail waiting in your in-box when you're sending a turn to someone else. (In other words, with the right partners it can be more hectic than live play). The norm, however, is that you play with something like one to six partners and send an e-mail or two a day to each. There's a separate forum here for finding PBEM opponents, and I beleive that if you go over to the Proving Grounds you can find a way to make arrangements for an IP/TCP on-line game (I still think that's an alternate brand name for that horrible yellow English mouthwash).
GreenAsJade
Also there are a few good clubs out there where PBEM is thriving and opponents are ready and waiting. We Band Of Brothers comes to mind TCP/IP seems to be hard to find. You need to find a regular opponent who's available at your time. There aren't people hanging around waiting for a TCP game (that I know of). GaJ
