Brigadier
Where are they? I have scanned the purchase units screens of the late war and cant find any (Mark 1 , 2 or 3 ). I see there is a heavy tank called an IS 2 , looks a bit like a JS I suppose but I thought Josef Stalin tanks had a "JS" designation? My eternal thanks to the Grogs that keep me informed!
Gaylord Focker
It's pronounced like this, Yosoph, in Russian Joseph is spelled with the I in place of the J. [ April 06, 2003, 01:49 AM: Message edited by: Gaylord Focker ]
cbb
Wow, is this thread another opportunity for me to say how bad we really, really, really need a winter JS-II mod?

Kirill S.
Stalin's real name is Joseph Dzhugashvili, as he is of Georgian heritage. Stalin is(was) 0% Russian, only his last name is Russian

vbfg
Slightly off topic, and I don't think it's ever been proven that this is why he chose it, but a similarly literal translation of Lenin would be 'lazy man'.
Kirill S.
a similarly literal translation of Lenin would be 'lazy man' You are incorrect. He chose the name Lenin after a worker strike was forcibly terminated at the river Lena. His real last name is Ulyanov
vbfg
My source is Lenin, Stalin and Trotsky: The Intelligentsia and Power by Phillip Pomper. I think it's a quote from Trotsky. It's the only reference I've ever seen to the origin of his pseudonym.

According to my copy of Smirnitsky, a lazy person would be lentyai or lenivets. I recall being told that Lenin took his name from the river Lena, and indeed that there was something of a minor tradition of Russians taking pseudonyms from river names, although I can think of no other examples at the moment. All the best, John.
