Russian weapons questions - many of them

Recommended Posts

Man, the Russians were worse than the Germans when it came to having a bunch of different weapons. I am totally in the dark ( I know what's new ) about what these are. Example: They have the SVT-40 rifle, the Mos-NG rifle, the PPSh SMG and the DP LMG. Anybody care to describe these to me? Like what the ammo was and the speed or you could even just refer me to a site if that's easier.

Well, just a brief summery from the Game standpoint.

SVT-40 rifle - Semi-Auto battle rifle with a ten round clip. Uses same cartarage as the Mos-NG rifle. Firepower wise, it doesn't matter much with regular rifle squads as they only get one per squad. However, early war paratroopers get 4 per squad, and that gives them a bit more punch at close range.

Mos-NG rifle - Your Standard 5 shot bolt action rifle. Inferiour to the Mauser when it comes to in game firepower.

PPSh SMG - The bain of German soldiers everywhere and one of the main advantages of soviet infantry. Outclasses the German MP40 SMG. Russian rifle platoons always pack at least two or three. And the dreaded SMG squad carries nothing but the PPSH.

DP LMG - Slightly inferiour to the German MG-34, and both are really outclassed by the MG-42.

The thing about Russian gear is that it is cheap. Right now, Shosties4th is stompinh my Panzergrenider Company into the ground with a Battalion of Green Russian infantry and 2 Platoons of SU-76s.

And thus its funny that the Russians are better versed in many kinds of man to man situations in the game. A 8 man Kraut squad might have a good MG or two, but then again, the Soviets will rush your ass with a company of submachineguns.

Thanks for the answers gentlemen. I appreciate it. I wasn't aware that the Russians even had semi-auto rifles. You learn something new every day. :D I also thought that they had developed their own SMG's only after recieving the short end of the stick from the SMG equipped Germans. So it appears they had them first then? Hmmmm. Another something learned. Nippy you mention that the game favors the firepower of the German Mauser over the Russian's rifle round. I find that interesting as there is not a dimes worth of difference between the two cartridges in real life anyway. I wonder why BFC would model it that way? Yes, the Mauser is probably recognised as the better built rifle but that shouldn't have anything to do with firepower, that's strictly the result of the cartridge and since both were basicaly the same power wise I find that curious.

Perhaps they are taking into consideration the accuracy of the rifle itself when computing firepower? Hey thanks White Phosphorus for that site. It's great. I book marked it for future use. Excellent site.

Beware: The SMG squads have only small ammo counts, most around 25 and they can waste them within 2 turns sometimes !

I use SMG squad limited, mostly to finish off squads which i first pin down with regular squads.

In my most battles i dont have them at all.

BTS in discussing the relative merits of the 9mm vs 45cal SMG during CMBO days with all else being equal judge that the 45cal due to its greater size results in greater CMxx firepower figures.

German K98 7,92mm

Soviet Mos-NG 7,62mm

The Russians developed SMG squads after thier experence in Finnland in 39/40 after running into SMG heavy Sissi squads (X2 Rifle X7 SMG)

As for using them in game, they have 4 areas where they excell at:

- Thick forests

- Built up Urban areas

- Night time/Bad weather (Any non-terrain feature that cuts visability way down)

- Tank escort. Keeps nasty tank hunter teams at bay. The 9 man squads fit very nicely on the tanks, and the tank's firepower more than makes up for SMG squad's lack of long range punch.

Still, as other have said, they burn through ammo very quickly and are useless at ranges beyond 100m.

Interesting. I use them to hold places; if a group of infantry gets near a place I don't want them at, despite all the fire from my support weapons, it will be an extremely nasty surprise to have a SMG platoon open up on you from 50 meters.

I also use them to rush a target, even 2 or 3 moving and alive SMG dudes cause heavy damage on infantry.

They developed SMGs as early as 1927 (PPD M34-38), they just didn't mass produce them.
