As you will see if you read them, there is a strong difference of opinion among even reasonably experienced players regarding the effectiveness of flamethrowers. The differences led to this challenge match between Broken and JasonC to test flamethrower effectiveness. Unfortunately, the match was never completed to my knowledge. Hint, hint....
slysniper
luck, is a nice mixture, had one flame guy in the woods by himself, in a foxhole. He held off a platoon and a half of men for 4 or 5 turns and created panic and death at all corners. His reward was death but he shall be remembered always in my pixal army.

And JC curiously disappeared a few turns into that game  Anyway, not trying to be a prick we've just gone through Flamethrowers and how to use them well so many times it's hard to contribute anything fresh to the topic.
Code13
Flamethrowers have always brought me varied reslts, I think the AI is far too quick to spot them and turn ever single gun that can see them onto the team, which in itself can be useful... But I have got the best effects when combining them with a good armoured troop transporter like a bren carrier or kangeroo. Good for bunkers in attack and tanks in ambush, when they can hit that is!
SgtMuhammed
Vehicle mounted FTs can be a cast iron B!@#h. The foot versions are very specialized. I just had a lot of success with them in some urban fighting. Not much of the town left though.
