Vossiewulf
Something I've always wondered- why do the guns sag down on knocked-out tanks?
Mr. Tittles
In the case of the Tiger, the counter balance spring would get heated and lose its tension.
rexford
Mr. Tittles, Do you have data on the tungsten core weight and diameter in the U.S. 90mm HVAP round (M304) used during WW II. I would appreciate your assistance if you have access to such data. Thank you. Lorrin
Mr. Tittles
Top of my head they weighed (total) about 7.6 kg or so but as far as component weight, no idea. Wouldnt be that hard to calc given a cross sectional drawing though. An interesting sidenote is that US 76mm HVAP was VERY accurate. It was probably very balanced and maybe there was a way that the core and body were locked so that there was no slippage. On the other hand, mycenius test num 1 makes it clear that US tankers had a hard time observing shots!
Mr. Tittles
76mm HVAP: Light weight projectile with 3.9 lb tungsten carbide core 1½" in diamter in steel sheath. Aluminium body, steel base, windshield, and tracer. 9.5 lb 90mm 7.6 kg.=16.72 lb The 76mm HVAP is almost exactlty 1/2 diameter. If the 90mm was a scaled up version, perhaps its 45mm? 6.86 lbs?
rexford
The discussion I'am in requires an exact figure, I think Hunnicut's Pershing or Sherman books might have the 90mm HVAP stats but I sold em both.
