You either have to change the formation type, say, from SMG platoon to rifle platoon, or you may, if doing scenario development, be able to selectively kill off parts of a squad so that it starts a battle already missing certain men. Double check the second idea, since I may be wrong. You can, of course, elect to apply prebattle combat losses to units in a QB, but that axe falls randomly, sad to say for you.
