The "Führertank": historical info?

Recommended Posts

Hello!

On this forum, we've discussed many wacky German tank designs, so I thought I'd throw a personal mystery to the pile.

I have a faint memory of reading about German plans of building a massive APC-like tank that could transport Hitler safely to the frontline. The tank was supposed to be durable enough to withstand a direct bomb hit, but the project was scrapped when it turned out that the vehicle (or crawling fortress, more like) was so heavy and noisy that it cracked the pavement on autobahns, and caused the windows of nearby houses to rattle and break.

Does anyone have more info on this oddball project, or was it just an urban legend of WW2?

My memory is hazy... I think this vehicle was either a pre-war design, or it was planned to use in the eastern front specifically (post-'41 design). And if I remember correctly, the vehicle was also supposed to be big enough to both accomodate Der Führer snugly (living quarters), and have a war room of some sort for the general staff.

Hopefully someone can dig up bits of info on this - I doubt any photos exist, only plans on paper.
