Gibraltar useless?

Italians can hammer the gibraltar-port to oblivion and then just sail out to the atlantic. The allies can try to stop this but if the axis brings up air to conquered vichy-france then allies dont stand a chance. So what purpose do the allies have for occupying the fortification??? None as I see it...

In the real world, it WAS primarily to keep

enemy fleets from going out of (or into) the

Med, and secondarily to maintain the shipping

routes thru the Med (which were rerouted around

Africa when Italy entered and losses on the Med

route were too great).

I'm not sure if I like the "bombard port to zero

and bypass it" feature tho. In Third Reich it

was worth victory points IIRC (loss of prestige

and all that a la the loss of Singapore to the

Japanese).

I think the correct thing to do about this is to have a Houserule or something that ports that are bombed cannot be occupied or bypassed.

Because the whole purpose sets Gibraltars fortification out of play as a result of this bug/feature

I think that the current set-up works well and is historical. The Italians can be stopped from getting out of the Med and bombarding the Gibralter port if the UK defends it. A UK BB sitting in Gibralter port will give much more than it takes if attacked by the Italians.

Gibralter was a pain for the Axis because of the fleets based there.

AND, even if Gibralter is left undefended by the navy ... the UK gains MPP each turn and forces the Italians to bombard the port if they want to get into or out of the Med.
