Wesreidau
I`m looking forward to a night of CM gaming at Wittmann`s pad tonight. We usually play TCP/IP over the net but are considering hooking up our 2 PC`s via network cards. We`ve done this before with other games (prior to CM`s release of course) so have no problems understanding network protocols, configs etc. Can anyone advise if its possible to play CM on a LAN? If so, any special things we should watch out for as far as IP addresses go etc? Thanks in advance for any help chaps (and Kitty)
brooktrout
Hi Wesreidau, If you have been successfully connecting with each other over the net thru TCP/IP then there should not be too much difference when connecting locally. When connecting remotely, you are (if using modems) using the dial-up adapter to connect thru a WAN or wide area network. If you connect your machine to a cable to another machine, either thru a hub/switch or single cable, then you are basically doing the same thing except thru a LAN or local area network which would use the network adapter. The thing to look at when going from a WAN to a LAN connection is the properties of the TCP/IP protocol that are bound to the network card. Since you are not dialing in thru an ISP and being leased an IP address, you will now have to assign a static IP address. To do this, use the network applet in control panel and look for the TCP/IP protocol that is bound to the network adapter and open it's properties. This is where you would assign something like 192.168.0.1 for one machine and increment the last number for the second machine and giving the same subnet for both - 255.255.255.0. Once you have done this, open a DOS box and type "PING (ip address)" of the other machine and you should get a response back.
