Hollow Question (huh?)

Recommended Posts

This is a question about hollow (or is it HEAT?) rounds piercing the armor.

I've read a story by one of Afghanistan (Russian 1980s) and he said that it took 5 seconds for a charge to melt the armor and destroy a tank. If the crew didn't bail out during those 5 seconds, they were a hamburger.

Is it true? Does it really take 5 seconds to pierce (or melt) the armor?

In cmbo the tanks get knocked out instantly.

Is it true because of T80's thick armor comparing to the tanks of ww2?

I think you're confusing HEAT rounds with a thermite grenade or some other exothermic device. HEAT rounds are fairly instantaneous. If you've ever seen a video of an anti-tank missile destroying a tank, you've seen a HEAT warhead in action. The only diffence between modern HEAT and the WW2 version is scale and method of delivery.
