Crazy idea for CM... what do you think?

Recommended Posts

Online multiplayer games are really hot these days. How about doing something similar for CM? Before ye olde grognards scream bloody murder, consider that games like Ultima Online are best sellers and generate the most revenue for the developer. In fact, this is something we gamers can for CM ourselves, but it works on the honor system smile.gif <I can hear those uh-ohs already>

I am thinking along the lines of turn-based, multiplayer game game with a large (nearly 5*5) matrix of maps. There are two sides and each one is controlled by a panel of generals who give orders to formations. Players command formations or sub-formations according to their success in battle. You're requied to attack and defend different maps. The generals from different sides agree to disagree on a map and send in their respective nearest formations. We can calculate transit times to see if it will be a meeting engagement, attack or defense game for either side. The results can be slugged out between two players. Reinforcements can be calculated at the start according to the proximity of other units. As you can see, this works on the honor systeam and close coordination. At the end of the day, results are calculated and a new overview map is placed online. Someone good with programming could perhaps make a simple program to do this. It'll be exhilerating to hear about your side's wins and losses and share news with other grognards when the sun goes down!

Okay, by now you are either intrigued or probably thinking I'm some kind of nut (I'm NOT.. droool... dribble!). This idea seems too hot to just toss aside. Is it feasible? Has it been done before for a game like CM? Can BTS help us? Any input would be appreciated!

It is a very good idea. Something similar is being done over at cmhq : The "meta" campaign system. You may want to read there for ideas.

I've got a scenario in testing now that's based on the online MP game called Myth. It has no historical context at all, it's just a fun schlachtfest smile.gif

It was a common custom at that time, in the more romantic females, to see their soldier husbands and sweethearts as Greek heroes, instead of the whoremongering, drunken clowns most of them were. However, the Greek heroes were probably no better, so it was not so far off the mark--Flashman
