OT: Voice-over-net software.

Hi all.

Me and some friends use to get together and play Diablo2 occasionally. Now someone came up with the idea of using some voice-over-net program at the same time, to enhance immersion.

Has anyone tried this? What programs work and which is best?

The question has bearing to CM as well as I think most people with the technological prerequisites would like to use this once the TCP/IP is here. It would be wonderful to not only play someone over the net, but actually hear them wince when their tanks brew up.

The impersonal feeling you get from computer games could probably lessen somewhat if we could get this working.

Thanks,

Sten

Yes, this works fairly well. It of course depends on the quality/speed of your connection and game being played, but overall it works pretty good.

Here are a few programs I'm aware of:

http://www.teamsound.com

http://www.battlecom.com

http://www.rogerwilco.com

All 3 of these programs work pretty good. My preference is for TeamSound. I feel it gives the best sound quality for the least bandwidth and CPU usage.

I believe Microsoft NetMeeting and Messenger can also do voice chat, but I would be suspicious that both these programs use more CPU and bandwidth than the ones I've listed.

I had used Battlecom for awhile and enjoyed it, but had a problem getting it to work through my Linksys Cable Router in server mode. When I switched to TeamSound, not only did it work fine through the router, but I feel it has better sound quality.

But, I don't think you can go wrong with using any of these 3 programs. Give them a try, I think you'll like them all. By the way, all 3 of these are free.
