4. With your RAM, do you know what brand name & model motherboard you have? If so, I'd think you could find the needed info from the manufacturers website. (Or better yet, hopefully from the motherboard manual?) I've not found out a perfect solution to checking what type/speed ram you have just by reading the numbers off the chips. Some SDRAM modules have a sticker on them labeled PC100 or PC133. Might be worth a look. I'm just guessing, but I'd say you either have PC100 or PC133 SDRAM. But you do need to find out for sure before adding RAM so you make sure to add the same type/speed. You also need to find out what configuration your existing RAM is. (i.e. - Do you have 4 - 16MB chips, or 2 - 32MB, or 1 - 64MB) Depending on how many slots your motherboard has for memory, may limit what you have to do to upgrade. If you have 4-16MB's, then you most likely will need to replace all those modules with new. If you have 2-32's or 1-64, then you shouldn't have any problems upgrading to at least 128MB. I'd definately recommend getting to 128MB for today's apps/games. With your video card, it appears you already have a card that uses the nVidia TNT2 chip. This ain't exactly a slouch of a card. Certainly there are faster cards now days though. Since you have a TNT2, I'd recommend a GeForce 2 GTS card. You can look at getting a GeForce 2MX, but the performance gain won't be all that much over the TNT2. (At least not what you might expect.) The full GeForce 2 GTS would probably be better but of course costs more. You can find the 32M DDR version for around $200 or even less depending on the manufacturer. As you already know, Pricewatch is a good place to start. I've heard good things about Guillemot, ASUS, and even Creative Labs. I currently have a Guillemot GeForce 256. (Original GeForce) I've been very happy with it. I have 2 other computers running an original Canopus TNT and want to upgrade them. I'm considering an ASUS v7700 GeForce 2 GTS Pure for them, but with holidays, etc., now's not a good time for upgrades for me so I'm waiting. Perhaps once the nv20 (or whatever it'll be called) comes out, the GeForce 2 prices will drop some more and that will get me to upgrade.
 5.
quote:
Originally posted by aaronb: ... - "Advanced/Forwarding", match Service Port 7023 to your game machine's IP address (which should be hardcoded in "Control Panel/Network" if you're going to do this - no DHCP).

You can leave DHCP enabled on the router, and if you want, you can probably even use DHCP for your pc. If you've hard coded your pc(s), just set the starting DHCP address in the router above the hard coded addresses of your pc(s). You'd do something like this if you had a buddy with a laptop who might come over and he could simply plug into your router and be good to go. My brother does that when he visits, and it works great. Also, if you want your pc to use DHCP, it will "probably" be ok to do this and still forward the port to it. I know the concern is that you won't always come up with the same IP address but the DHCP lease is good for a time period on your pc and if the lease runs out, the next time your pc powers up and asks for a TCP/IP address, it should 'request' the IP address it leased previously and would normally get it. In a home network, things probably don't change around enough to cause a problem with port forwarding. (But if there is a concern, then like you said, just disable it.)
 6.
quote:
Originally posted by Freyland: and then see your efforts carried out on the battlefield? Did we not all "ooh" and "ahh" about watching the films over and over again, just to see that cool explosion, or figure out how FOW just screwed us, or just to admire the reactions of the Tac AI? How many of you spent huge amounts of time making the "perfect setup"? Using TCP takes away all of that. Okay, yes you can start your game as a PBEM to allow the requisite time to setup your troops. But *none* of the other joys of CM can be enjoyed as thoroughly. If I have two areas of combat occurring, I can only really watch one of them. Or I can stay in a high-vantage point and watch everything, but at the expense of all those other wonderful camera angles. I certainly am unable to appreciate the nuances of any situation I am not directly watching during my 60sec of film. (yes, I can watch the film again, but then I lose valuable time I need to make tactical decisions, another one of those things that make Turn-based games so enjoyable). The bottom line to me, is that TCP play in CM is no different than a simple RTS game where you just throw wads of troops at each other without any deep strategy. It all comes down to who has the biggest or most guns in a given conflict. Make the timer longer, you say? Then why not just go back to playing rapid-fire PBEM games with ICQ or IM? My point is to remind everyone why we fell in love with CM in the first place, and that the well-received TCP patch may actually be a step backwards from the game's achievements that make it stand out in the wargaming genre. Your Humble Servant Jonathan

When you say 'we' I hope you're not speaking for me. I disagree with just about everything you've said. I neither have the spare time nor desire to spend countless hours reviewing films, plotting moves, or enjoying explosions. TCP/IP is a god send for me and is the only way I'd ever consider playing this game against another opponent. If you don't like it, don't use it.
 7.
quote:
Originally posted by LEGEND15: So you can't serve if you have a router. Don't know if I have one. I have two computers networked, both are connected to a cable modem. Both computers have their own IP number. Is that a Router or will I be able to serve a game?

No, this is not a router. If all you have is just the cable modem provided by your ISP, then you have no router involved in your setup. If in fact each of your 2 pc's have their own "unique" IP address assigned by the ISP, then you will have no problems whatsoever playing CM against another opponent on the Internet as either host or client. You're toughest problem will probably be deciding which computer to use. Keep in mind I'm assuming when you said each pc has an IP address and attached to the cable modem, that the IP address is in fact assigned by your ISP for use on the internet and NOT a locally assigned IP address for the internal network such as 192.168.0.1. In a situation such as mine, I have a 'single' IP address assigned by my ISP but have a 3 computer network. Thus to get all 3 on the internet, you have to 'share' this address/connection. There are various ways to do this. The way I've done it is to buy a Linksys Cable/DSL router. This not only has a built in 4 port 10/100mbs ethernet switch, but also shares the single IP address/connection for all 3 computers to use. However, there can be issues with getting pc's in this type of setup to run multiplayer games across the internet because of the sharing involved. (Different routers/devices or even software solutions for sharing may or may not have the same issues.) With you, you apparently have a unique internet IP address for each pc and no sharing is needed, thus it's just like having 2 completely seperate pc's on the internet.
 8.
quote:
Originally posted by Nitsud42: I too am running the Linksys Cable/Router at home. I will be testing configurations when I get there this afternoon. Hemo2, Have you tried useing the DMZ option?

I do put one of my pc's into the DMZ for some other games I host and figured I'd do this for CM. (Haven't had a chance to try this yet with CM.) But if it only uses port 7023 as Madmatt has responded, then it won't be necessary and I can forward that single port to my pc. (Sure wished the Linksys router had better capabilities with the port forwarding, etc., but I guess for the price that's a bit much to expect.)
 9. I too am very interested in finding out what port(s) CM uses for TCP/IP multiplay. According to the SyGate software, DirectPlay uses the below ports. However, it was my experience that some of the ports used everytime I'd play a game would 'randomly' be different. (Don't know if I just wasn't reading the info properly or what though.) I no longer use the SyGate software and switched to the Linksys Cable/DSL router awhile back. It works fairly well, but if I read the release notes on this patch properly, I will not be able to host any games behind my router. That's somewhat disappointing, but there are worse things in life. Anyway, here's the info from the SyGate software configuration about DirectPlay. Can't vouch if it's accurate or not. (Note the lines showing a different beginning & ending port number. I 'think' this indicates the entire 'range' of ports, thus there's quite a few to plan for.) # DirectPlay (Game Zone, Mplayer, Boneyards) - Modification tested on 8/16/99 # Most DirectPlay games use this rule :INIT "DirectPlay" OUT TCP 47624 47624 0.0.0.0 0 R :SUB IN TCP 47624 47624 0.0.0.0 0 0 AD IN UDP 2300 2400 0.0.0.0 0 0 AD IN TCP 2300 2400 0.0.0.0 0 0 AD OUT UDP 2300 2400 0.0.0.0 0 D OUT TCP 2300 2400 0.0.0.0 0 D IN TCP 9110 9110 0.0.0.0 0 0 AD OUT TCP 9110 9110 0.0.0.0 0 D IN TCP 9113 9113 0.0.0.0 0 0 AD OUT TCP 9113 9113 0.0.0.0 0 D IN TCP 28800 29000 0.0.0.0 0 0 AD OUT TCP 28800 29000 0.0.0.0 0 D IN UDP 8000 9000 0.0.0.0 0 0 AD IN TCP 8000 9000 0.0.0.0 0 0 AD OUT UDP 8000 9000 0.0.0.0 0 D OUT TCP 8000 9000 0.0.0.0 0 D :END [This message has been edited by Hemo2 (edited 11-29-2000).]

Everytime I've bumped up my resolution and set CM to run at that resolution and then change my desktop resolution back down, CM always redetects the video card and will not run at a resolution higher than the desktop.

(Assuming of course you have your computers on that LAN configured to run TCP/IP.)
 12.
quote:
Originally posted by Sabrewolf: Also, dont forget Nvidia's card is very expensive and they produce new modification every 3 months (ultra, pro, gts, mx) so you might wanna wait or you will regret spending about $400 bucks.

$400? You can find an ASUS GeForce2 GTS DDR 32MB cards for $200. Or even $150-$160 for a Vision Tek or Inno3D. You can find the GeForce2 MX 32MB for less than $100. Now if you're talking the Ultra series with 64MB then yes, $400 or more.
 13. Do you not think the TCP/IP routines would need to be developed for CM2 anyway? This is not a waste of time and in fact it will benefit CM2. This time used to develop the TCP/IP is time well spent for both CM and CM2. Let's not forget BTS promised this TCP/IP patch WILL be released for CM and that is a major reason I purchased it. If you're tired of waiting for a game that doesn't exist, then play with the game you do have.
 14. I've not been able to get the AI to do this either. Seems like it won't make use of any vehicle that doesn't have a gun mounted on it. (At least that's my impression.) I tried making a similiar scenario and had armed vehicles in the lead and marked the surrounding area as friendly in the scenario editor to get them going, but upon starting the battle, the AI simply either immediately disembarks the troops and they scatter, or the trucks just sit there with embarked troops and will never advance. I put a buttload of victory flags up ahead to entice them to drive forward, but it just doesn't work. The troops always disembark or just sit there. If it's a limitation of the game, that's fine, but it would be nice to know if there is a way to do this and we're just not doing it right, or not.
 15. I had tried to make a scenario where both sides had some trucks, jeeps, kubelwagens and loaded troops into them. The idea being these troops would be transported to/close to the objective. I locked them into place so the AI (or human) couldn't move them elsewhere on setup. However, upon play testing the battle, the AI would always disembark 'some' of the trucks and others would stay embarked. Generally though, after a few turns, all the troops would disembark and begin the slow march to the objective on foot. Which of course made me wonder of what use these vehicles are when the AI is in control of them. With what little I've played with the scenario editor, I've not found a way to get the AI to actually 'transport' the embarked troops as I had planned. If there's a way, I'd be interested in trying it out.

 17. The sound on my computer is fine. The only thing that comes to mind initially is maybe check the hardware acceleration for your sound card and try bumping this down a notch or two. (This is for Win98. If you have Win95 I don't believe there are any hardware acceleration options.)
 18. Normally I would say yes, that vehicles offer more worth. But it really depends on the vehicle and you can't just make a blanket change for all vehicles. So my preference is to not change this by factoring in additional cost/value for vehicles just because they are vehicles. With regards to the .50 jeep, I think its' cost is about right as it is when compared to the .50 team. It's only advantage is its' speed, but has disadvantages because it can't hide, is more easily destroyed, and can't traverse all the terrain that the team can.
 19. Please leave the point values as they are. Since this isn't real life, there will always be units used as disposable recon or in manners they weren't intended. I don't believe increasing the point values for low end vehicles will stop this use. I think this is more of an AI issue than a point value issue. You could increase the 'penalty' for loosing such vehicles, but what if the vehicles are used in an 'appropriate' manner and are lost anyway? You then increase the penalty for someone who uses them in an appropriate manner. You could increase the 'bonus' for having vehicles survive the battle, but then won't that create an environment where someone could withhold some non-combat vehicles from battle to 'improve' their battle outcome? Maybe units that are hidden or in ambush mode could be made to not open fire as quickly which in turn would reduce how soon they are spotted by the enemy. But even with this there may be situations when you want your troops to open fire sooner on the advancing enemy to prevent him from getting to close. The best thing I can think of right now is to perhaps have vehicles with no offensive capabilities be seen by the enemy as less of a threat and not be fired upon as quickly, thus reducing how soon or easy your troops reveal their location by opening fire and get spotted. But I think this should only be appropriate for "hidden" or "ambush" troops and not normal troops sticking their heads up looking around. Of course the vehicle would need to be 'identified' by your troops as having no weapon. But if it's identified as a transport with troops embarked, then it should be dealt with as a threat. But something like a jeep with no gun or empty truck, etc. could be treated in this manner. This is a rather difficult issue and think it is great that BTS would give special attention to it, but no matter what is implemented, there will be additional side effects as a result that may punish appropriate use or different gamey tactics developed to get around it. Not to mention how or if the changes can effectively be programmed into the AI. Thus, leave the points as they are and tread softly before making other changes.
 20. Yes, this works fairly well. It of course depends on the quality/speed of your connection and game being played, but overall it works pretty good. Here are a few programs I'm aware of: http://www.teamsound.com http://www.battlecom.com http://www.rogerwilco.com All 3 of these programs work pretty good. My preference is for TeamSound. I feel it gives the best sound quality for the least bandwidth and CPU usage. I believe Microsoft NetMeeting and Messenger can also do voice chat, but I would be suspicious that both these programs use more CPU and bandwidth than the ones I've listed. I had used Battlecom for awhile and enjoyed it, but had a problem getting it to work through my Linksys Cable Router in server mode. When I switched to TeamSound, not only did it work fine through the router, but I feel it has better sound quality. But, I don't think you can go wrong with using any of these 3 programs. Give them a try, I think you'll like them all. By the way, all 3 of these are free.
 21.
quote:
Originally posted by Compassion: I would go for the GeForce 2 MX. Better performance than the original GeForce AND has hardware FSAA (and this directly impacts CM performance). My GeForce 256 (the origional) uses software FSAA and its very nice, but I'd prefer hardware. You and I have similar systems in that I have a dual celeron 466 box, but for games I've been playing in WIn98 and I can see the hit of using FSAA... For similar prices (My GeForce 256 DDR is still selling for about what the new GeForce 2 MX is priced at), I'd definately go for the richer features, faster speed and competitive price of the MX.

I've been interested in the new MX version of the GeForce, but could not verify it has hardware FSAA. Are you sure the MX version has hardware FSAA? From looking at nVidia's website on the features for the various chips, only the GeForce2 GTS Pro and the GeForce2 Ultra have hardware FSAA. (It does show the MX version has hardware T&L, but not FSAA.) Could just be an oversight on their part, or I just missed it, but I'd be interested in verifying if the GeForce2 MX does indeed have hardware FSAA.
 22. It's important to realize that with a PIII-450 processor, some of the newer video cards will not provide as much of performance increase over other generation cards as you might think. i.e. - GeForce2 over an original GeForce. That being said, I would recomend a GeForce card of some sort. Either the GeForce2 GTS or GeForce2 MX. You may want to consider the original GeForce card too. (On a PIII 450, the difference between a GeForce and GeForce 2 isn't as big of difference as you'd expect by having the new GeForce2 chip.) Many people prefer the Voodoo 5500 card too. (My personal preference is the GeForce, but there's no doubt Voodoo makes an excellent chip too.) I guess it depends on how much you want to spend and if you will keep this card for a future upgrade of your motherboard/cpu. If you plan to upgrade this part too someday, then get the faster video card today even though you will not realize all it's potential now. If it's a 'final' purchase for this computer, then I wouldn't get anything faster than the original GeForce or would even consider the previous TNT2 Ultra to save money because the little performance increase isn't worth the added cost.
 23. A couple of other good free voice programs are TeamSound and Battlecom. (Battlecom was bought up by Microsoft recently, but you can still download the program.) They're at: http://www.teamsound.com http://www.battlecom.com/download.html I personally prefer TeamSound over Battlecom and RW, but all are pretty good. I believe both programs require a full duplex sound card.
 24. Schrullenhaft is right about the Plus. The Plus pack you're referring to is a seperate program you had to purchase. Active Desktop is "bad". Quite simple if you want to do gaming, don't use it! 25. If you have odd colored buildings in the game, I would suspect the video driver first, but there have been some issues with certain mouse drivers and you are having weird problems selecting buttons, etc. If you're running Intellimouse software in the background, perhaps try not loading that to troubleshoot and see if the problem goes away. (Just use the generic Microsoft Mouse driver from Windows.) Of course update your video drivers and perhaps DirectX 7.0a. Maybe even check for updated mouse drivers or reload them if you have special mouse drivers/software. Also, maybe if you have some options turned on in your display properties like 'display icons in all colors', etc. maybe try turning those off to see if they help. Anything running in the background or that has an affect on the display could be the cause and you need to eliminate all those items first and then re-add them back in one at a time to see which one is the problem. Also, what type of video card & mouse do you have? Some ATI video cards seem to have issues with fog and transparencies in the game.
