sburke
Good timing I didn't want to live in gentrified. No where near as interesting.

We really are suckers. Advertisers and vendors have known it for years. The missionary Mormon girls I've encountered represent a vast upgrade over the rather matronly Jehovah Witness women who've come to my door. No offense to the late Michael Jackson.

Reminds me of an experience of my own about 35 years ago when I was living in Oregon. It was in a part of the state known as the Bible Belt and I got hit on pretty often. I evolved a variety of tactics for fending them off. If they were nice, I was nice back. If they were obvious fools, I was not above applying a little mental ju jitsu on them. But this one time I almost weakened. I was getting ready to go out one evening when there was a knock on the door. When I opened it there stood the cutest little 16 year old lugging the biggest Bible I have ever seen. Since she was very petite, it must have been a real job to carry that thing from door to door. As soon as I opened the door, the first words out of her mouth were, "Would you like to talk about the Lord?" In a highly conflicted state I mumbled something that was probably polite but exceedingly lame and shut the door. Over the years I have relived that moment and thought of other ways I might have met the occasion. One would have been to invite her in and let have her rap. After she was done, I might have said something along the lines of, "You know, I might be able to come to Jesus if only, if only, some good person could show me what God's love is really like." Probably wouldn't have worked and might have led to blackmail even if it did. But one can dream... Michael

'Coulda, woulda, shoulda' the most depressing words in a man's life. But in that case, you probably did the right thing. Once a girl's brain is filled to bursting with some kind ideology- religious or political- there's no hope. It's helpful to remember that the proselytizing urge breaks down to self-persuasion and the religion or political ideology on offer must be contrary to common sense. For example, the greater the evidence of the failure of Communism (a secular religion) as an economic system the more fanatical their adherents became. Logical faiths don't propagate.
