John Kettler
Thanks to our mutual friend the Internet Wayback Machine, I'm somewhat delighted to be able to provide this semi splendid list of German destroyed AFVs. Why am I not effusive? No imagery from Op Bagration! There is some great material on 122mm and 152mm vs the large Kitties. The flank shots range from a neat hole. Panther vs 122mm https://web.archive.org/web/20071216084136/http://www.battlefield.ru/destroyed/germany/panther_14.jpg to the simply unnerving Panther vs 152mm, likely an ISU-152 https://web.archive.org/web/20060627231016/http://www.battlefield.ru/destroyed/germany/panther_11.jpg Why go through the front when you can shoot the side instead? King Tiger vs 122mm https://web.archive.org/web/20071216085513/http://www.battlefield.ru/destroyed/germany/king_04.jpg ZIS-2--the super 57mm vs King Tiger. Still think towed AT guns are useless? https://web.archive.org/web/20071216084504/http://www.battlefield.ru/destroyed/germany/king_06.jpg Moebelwagen vs Il-2 https://web.archive.org/web/20071216082943/http://www.battlefield.ru/destroyed/germany/mobelwagen_01.jpg Wirbelwind vs 122mm ISU-122 Am amazed it still looks like a Wirbelwind. Maybe because its flank armor is so thin a through and through occurred? Right through the driver and radio operator! https://web.archive.org/web/20071216084447/http://www.battlefield.ru/destroyed/germany/wirbelwind_01.jpg Why Hummels should stay home... 76mm or 85mm (hard to tell) vs Hummel https://web.archive.org/web/20071216084012/http://www.battlefield.ru/destroyed/germany/hummel_01.jpg Lots more where these came from. Oddball_E8
Surely that last one must have either set off the stored ammo or been an HE shell (or both)
John Kettler
Oddball_E8, What we're looking at is from Russian military-technical survey teams of the battlefield, as evidenced by the pain circles around penetrations. If you look at the small armor panel on the ground to the Hummel's left/pic's right, there a hole circled next to a number. I believe that penetration caused the chain of events which destroyed the Hummel. It's surprising it didn't also burn, but maybe the thunderous blast snuffed it, just like the way dynamite used to snuff out oil fires.
