A mature artistic medium?

Recommended Posts

I have seen prejudice against this form of media on this forum and I have to say I am tired of this prejudice. Video games are a mature artistic medium! It's not all shooting and killing. But does this medium has to cater only to kids? I like works of art and yes that includes video games that cover serious adult issues like war, genocide, politics, love, sex, etc with maturity. Comic books are now covering serious topics.

How do we make video games a more respected medium? A lot of people think games are a waste of time.

IF video games are a waste of time,

THEN golf, cricket, chess, football - you name it, it's a waste of time too.

This argument does not place a value on the time used or spent, nor does it state that there are not activities which would be difficult to identify as time wasters. It should, hopefully, quieten the other side for long enough for me to enjoy the games while they think about the complex deconstruction required to form a coherent argument addressing the original statement. (and if they can't be bothered, then neither can I - nothing wastes time like an argument that consists of "Is! "Is not!")

hope that helps

Games will become a more respected and mature medium precisely to the degree that a majority of the buying public demands it and will spend their money to support it. If a majority of games now seem adolescent or even pre-adolescent it is because the game playing public fits that demographic, either literally or as older folks seeking an opportunity to regress into an adolescent state of mind for a few hours each week.

I am sure most people would agree that making 3D comuter games is certainly a form of art, playing them though, well, i think it is justified to question the value of artistic expression that comes from playing Call of Duty 5 :D. Similarily, films are widley regarded as a form of art, going to the movies and eating popcorn though isnt.
