Crossing foot bridges.

Recommended Posts

Mid bridge pile up - hummm. The best thing to do is have a way point on the land at one end and the next one on the land at the other end. Then make sure that there is some space between squads as they take turns crossing.

Having said that it sounds like the number one problem you have is crossing under fire. There is a solution for that - don't. Make sure the enemy covering the bridge is suppressed, routed or killed before you cross. Crossing open ground is bad enough but crossing a choke point like a bridge is even worse when the enemy can get guns on you.

I suspect half the "pile up" is as the unsuppressed members of teams attempt to regroup with their teammates who went to ground early, once their self-preservation algorithms have cancelled their current orders, plus the now-reocvered cowerers running forward to the last waypoint they were given, and then trying to get back to the place where everyone decided they should be cowering, combined with the attempts to advance of any troops that managed not to get suppressed, and the attempts to retreat of any teams so badly beat up they're routing.

They were piling up even before they were fired upon. Must be dodgy AI pathfinding. We cant have it all I guess.

If by "piling up" you mean lots of soldiers in a tight place, you may be trying to run too many through the same space at once. I've seen that kind of thing happen when trying to move troops through gaps in hedgerows for instance. They get in each other's way and it takes them forever to clear the gap and go on their way. Being under fire would only make it much, much worse. Some things you might try:

1. As has been suggested by others, deal with whatever enemy units are covering the bridge. This is essential.

2. If you are using complete squads, break them down into teams.

3. Leave plenty of time between the running of each team. The second one should cross at least ten and preferably fifteen seconds after the first and so on. This can also help with suppression as the teams that are not running at the moment can provide some cover fire.

Hope this helps.

IMHO it´s best not to directly start at one bridge end and rather use some start standoff about 3-4 AS away. This enables a full squad to deploy into the extended column formation while on the move more easily, thus avoiding early piling up where it´s most unfortunate (at, or on the bridge). Fast and Assault works best for me, depending upon likely enemy opposition. A Hide at start and end WP also is of good use, to avoid unnecessary exposure.
