Buying a used Battlefront game

Recommended Posts

I have no doubt that BF would want me to buy a new game.

I was just trying to see if it was against their user policies to do so and if I would run into problems updating etc.

Some companies have no problem with you buying used games and others flatly state that it is against their user policy.

Not having seen a post so far saying either way I just wanted to make sure before I bought a game from someone.

To my knowledge there is no policy on used games being resold (person-to-person, not commercially).

The problems come with the licensing. With eLicense the previous customer has to unlicense their games so that they restore the original activations that came with the game. Since they are selling their game (and not just the media), they have to unlicense so that they no longer have a running game using that license key.

With the 'Online Activation System' (CMBN, Commonwealth, CMFI, SC WW1, Breakthrough, TOW 3 Korea, and newer games) this gets a little more complex because there is no unlicense feature. Once you install a game on a computer, it remains activated until you either run a 'gsClean' utility to wipe out the activation or the OS is reinstalled/upgraded or new/different hardware is installed (which deactivated/invalidates the activation). A customer CANNOT restore the activations to an OAS game themselves. We can typically add activations to a license key at the Helpdesk when you submit the license key. It is possible for Martin to determine the number of activations available to a license key, but I don't think he is looking at providing this service for potential purchases. The original purchaser of an OAS protected game has to uninstall the game and possibly use the gsClean utilities if they are selling their copy of the game.

In the case of downloads, we cannot facilitate the transfer of a game to another account (so that the download link and license key are listed in the used-purchaser's account). So if the seller is unethical, they can redownload the game (if it hasn't expired) and activate the game.
