Were the motorcycles w/ side cars ever used in front line combat, as scouts or anything? I'm not well read on this topic, but I know the reich had a decent number of these bikes. And if so, will CM employ them?

By this stage of the war the Germans, who had used them in GREAT numbers earlier, had largely taken them out of frontline service. Armored cars and Halftracks were substituted instead. So they were mostly for liason services. I say mostly, because nothing is 100% with the Germans wink.gif It is for this reason reason that MCs are so low on our list of priorites that they certainly will not be in any time soon (if ever).

Good answer....I have to admit that I have more "knowledge" of ww2 information from general perception of movies/ photos, than actual book study (although the history channel is pretty good) Thanks for the reply

The History Channel is an Evil Drug wink.gif Just say "no" or you will wind up watching for 10 straight hours, even if the show is "History of the Belt Buckle"! They just do such a damned fine job making history fun wink.gif

Yeah, the one about the NYC water supply tunnels is also quite interesting. Can you believe NYC has been supplied water through only two underground tunnels for around 100 years now--under continuous operation with no downtime for maintenance?!

One thing you have to watch out for, though, is the tendency of producers to throw stock footage in those shows every once in a while. Like when you watch a show about the Bulge and suddenly they throw in a scene of PzkW I's in Poland!

Yeah nothing like some good stock footage, when you've got an hour to fill. But to politely correct you all, it's called "The Hitler Channel" and not the erroneous "History Channel"... I just saw a 2 hour special called "Hitler's Hairdressers".

If they dont have 3 shows a week about Hitler, then the sponsors will pull their advertisements.... :P

Just a thought. I am reading 'Panzer Commander' by Hans Von Luck. He mentions several times the employment of motorcycle escorts in the recce battalion taking part in the battles to recapture the Orne bridges, in and around Escoville soon after the D-Day landings. Though as to their number I don't know as I am not very familiar with this subject.

Yea i know not only from books i've read (yes read panzer commander too) but from stories my grandfathers told me, that motorcycles were being used by the germans.

In CM though, i think they'd only be useful as scouts, and not very bold ones at that, remember these things would have been very easy to take out. Cool little guys to play with, but in the big picture in CM pretty useless.

The motorcycle troops were really only scouts and once they ran into something they died quickly.

A quick MG burst at that motorcycle 200 metres away = 1 died rider wink.gif

They were definitely used though but it gets into the realm of including a unit which wasn't very common in 1944 and would simply die once seen. (They were a lot more common early in the war and I want them for CM2 on the EF)
