Questions about AI planning

Recommended Posts

I am currently designing a scenario with a defensive line consisting of 3 fortified belts. What I want to happen with the defending Germans is for them to fall back to the next defensive line after a certain amount of time. Since there are no triggers this is the only option.

I want the 1st German belt to fall back after 30 minutes and I set up the AI plan to do just that or so I thought. I set the exit after to 30mins, set movement to dash and ran the game with scenario authoring mode on. The only American unit I had was an FO because I was just testing the German AI. After 50 minutes they haven't moved an inch.

Does there have to be combat happening to get the AI to follow the plan? Is exit after the right one to set at 30 minutes?

In a scenario I am designing, I had the same thing, an order to fall back to another line after a set time and it works fine.

Don't forget you have to set both a "exit after" time (say 28 mins) and a "exit before" time (say 32 mins) and paint the area where you want the troops to move to, then they will move between 28-32 mins to the area selected.

I have set the selected area to move to. I haven't set the exit before. Thanks for the tip.

I have been able to do it on another scenario but can't figure out what I am doing wrong on this one. I think I may just need to go over everything with fine tooth comb. Maybe I set it to as the American plan inadvertently.

Another question... I have each belt consisting of 1 company of infantry. Now If set them to pull back to a long defensive line, will they stay in command or will they mix up? Meaning will I have 1 HQ with 3 squads from different platoons. Do I have to have each platoon as a different AI group to keep them in command range? If so it kind of sucks that there aren't more AI groups. I like large battles but with so few it makes AI planning a pain.

Another thing to check is to make sure the plan is set to "frequently used" and all other plans are set to "not used" so the AI will only run that plan. I presume you are also running your test by playing the U.S. side? I spent time over the weekend running through AI plans and it is often the little things that trip you up.

If you want to make sure each platoon goes to a different spot, you have to use three AI groups, it may work with just one group per company, but that is hit or miss.
