At 48 seconds of the video, an interesting example of the covert use of an 82 mm mortar. Perhaps the Wagner artillery support groups use this method.

Personally, I don't find it impressive at all (but still interesting). I don't see how they can set their sights properly while locked in a shelter. This would mean (which the video does not show) that the vegetation is removed during the adjustment and orientation and so are visible... And then, to carry out that, it is necessary to have a position already prepared, at the present time (UAV & Co), I do not see how the Ukrainians could not notice the preparation. At 2:49 watch how he pulls the trigger like crazy... If he does that for real, he'll shoot around the corners. I know it's training, but one of the lessons of this war is that you have to disperse the men and the means. There the guys learn to leave in column and to shoot in line... The necessary realistic conditions therefore leave something to be desired.

  2. Germany announces delivery of combat vehicles to Ukraine

    Quote

Government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit announced on Friday the delivery of around 40 Marder infantry fighting vehicles to Ukraine before the end of the first quarter. A Patriot anti-aircraft missile system from army stocks is also to be delivered to Ukraine in the first quarter, he added. Training in the handling of the Marder vehicle is to take place in Germany and last about eight weeks, the spokesman said.

No way this precedent should be allowed to happen - the only agreeably ceasefire at this point is the one happening after RU withdrawal.

I think it will be an opportunity for them to use their narrative : "We, the Russians, are the good guys", "We respect God's peace", "the wicked Ukrainian Nazis don't respect God nor truces so they are the bad guys" etc... It's mostly for their internal narrative and in the worst cases that gives them 2 days to reorganize their units.

As 100% of Forumites will know, 'Tank' is an English word, originally a WW1 codename.  Both Americans and Russians adopted the term, hence yбак.

...But as @Taranis and our other copains here can advise us, the French term is char, which is applied freely to a broad range of tracked and wheeled military vehicles (e.g. char d'assaut), both armoured and unarmoured, as well as, wait for it, ordinary cars (voitures). Specific chars are differentiated by adjectives (e.g. light, etc.).  But I believe even the VBCI (Véhicule Blindé de Combat d'Infanterie), which Anglophones would call an IFV is still un char for short.

And since the first modern pattern 'tank' is the FT17, the Armée de Terre has as good a claim as anyone.

    images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTA12sJkrS6j_h0r3Pl6HX

...Meanwhile, panzer is literally, armour (as in a mail coat).

(OK, the Acadian branch of my family is proud of me now, in spite of my miserable French marks)

    P.S.

It is true that it is often the use that is made of it that takes over. In France, in 1940, there was AMC-35 (automitrailleuse de combat (literally = combat machinegun car while google translated it as armored car) which in fact was a light cavalry tank.  This comes from the fact that during the interwar period, the infantry benefited from tanks (infantry tanks) when the cavalry (=the armored branch) benefited from light vehicles of the semi-tracked and scout car type (they kept these titles).

This. This is exactly one of the interests of selecting this vehicle for Ukraine with its strategic mobility. Like a CAESAR, it is easy to send abroad.

I really imagine the Ukrainian army using them as an independent battalion/company assigned to the corps or the army and sent to areas where a breach is possible or possibly in ad hoc support of a quick offensive as it may have been the case during the Lyman Offensive. They would then be put back in reserve, repaired, resupplied etc in order to benefit as much as possible from their mobility while reducing their weakness (armour)

CFE treaty defines AMX-10RC as "Heavy Armament Combat Vehicle", and groups it separately with similar types:

    https://www.osce.org/files/f/documents/4/9/14087.pdf

Nevertheless, the "light tank" term seem to be accepted and repeated by various news sources. IMO it was a conscious choice of wordsw on the side of Macron and Zelensky, who both used it in their announcements:

Yes, you're right. It is a political choice. So a political name. I think it's like journalists who generically use the term Tank for MBT because it appeals to collective understanding and it immediately gives an image of power in people's heads. This may also be a big understatement for other allies. I think talking about Cavalry Tank for most people wouldn't make sense.
For me, what defines a vehicle is above all what you do with it, its doctrine. Often we say that a vehicle is bad, but in fact we have simply used it badly. That's why I prefer the term Cavalry Tank (IMHO) because it represents more why it was developed and how it could be used. The term therefore depends on what one does with it.
Taking the example of the 2nd World War, the PzIV was at the beginning of the conflict considered as a heavy tank of rupture and ended up at the end by becoming a kind of medium / light tank

Oryx wants "tank" to mean MBT.  It doesn't.

    some relevant words:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tank
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armoured_fighting_vehicle
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_battle_tank

Leopard 2 is a tank, AFV and an MBT
AMX-10 is a tank, AFV but not an MBT

AMX-10 can be a light tank, cavarly tank, tank destroyer or a scout tank.

    Leopard 2 is an MBT

    Yes.

I think the more appropriate term is Cavalry Tank. Because it is the French doctrine that wants it.

It is therefore not an MBT because of its light weight, low armor and mobility. The MBT descending among other medium and heavy tanks, while AMX-10RC does not have the capacity to carry out frontal attacks at all. While a cavalry tank in French and British WWII concepts, are mobile vehicles that must achieve rapid surprise attacks and reconnaissance. What our good old cavalry did before tanks. To this, we must add the anti-tank capacity thanks to its powerful gun and there it comes more from the doctrines of in-depth defenses of the Germans.

Guys, we really need to use the term AMX-10RC ! AMX-10 is the tracked IFV on a completely different chassis.

And this is from 2 months ago, they have fired a few hundred more since then...

And back to AMX-10, it isn't using the standard high-pressure 105mm, is it? The fact that they are sending them anyway is interesting, it looks like they must have solved for this somehow and think it's worth establishing srparate ammo logistics just for the unit(s) that will be using them. It will be really interesting to learn how they managed that, after the war of course.

And then it's a fairly light vehicle for the caliber it uses and therefore easier to send abroad and I would say to maintain. They accompanied us to Afghanistan. I was happier to have them nearby because they have enough to solve the problem of those opposite and then I admit that they would probably have been more of a priority target than us in the column (we were in VAB). We didn't lose a single one during the time I was there and it was able to pass everywhere even in very narrow ridges like in Uzbeen.

The AMX-10 RC is armed with a 105  mm caliber gun bearing the designation of Model F2 or F2 (MECA) or even BK MECA. The barrel has a length of 48 calibers (barrel of 5.04 meters), is not self-fretted and is covered with an anti-arcure sleeve . It has a semi-automatic vertical wedge breech allowing automatic ejection of the casing after firing. Its oscillating mass is 720  kg for a recoiling mass of 560  kg . The movement of the barrel in elevation is from +20° to -8°.
Close-up of the end of the gun tube with its M553 volley mirror and the muzzle brake model used by the AMX 10 RC since 1989.
The F2 (MECA) is a low-pressure gun, the most powerful of its caliber , designed specifically to be mounted on a light armored vehicle from 10 tons to 15 tons, its recoil effort is limited to 13 tons thanks to its brake of mouth and its recoil length of 60  cm . Its maximum allowable chamber pressure is 210  megapascals when firing an OCC 105 F3 11 ammunition . The entry into staffing of the arrow ammunition in 1987 required the installation of a new muzzle brake between 1987 and 1989.

FYI (for those who don't know), the RC of AMX-10RC = Roue Canon (Wheels, Gun). AMX is for Atelier d'Issy-les-Moulineaux (Issy-les Moulineaux Factory). The 10 is for the weight (even if in the end the vehicle weighs more than 10t with the improvements etc)

Can't find a link right now, but UA estimate is that they are able to produce 20 Kalibrs and 30 Kh-101 per month - one barrage per month, at best.

In other news, France is sending more and more serious AFVs:

You were faster than me 😄

I love the AMX-10RC. I really think he can be formidable in defensive position (mobile defense). It requires effective command, but the Ukrainians have shown us from the start that they are excellent. He also remains a formidable opponent for all Russian IFVs. And then after all, since the number of T-62s is increasing...

  10. A new Assault Brigade was formed in the Army

    Quote

Ukrainian Command continues to cooperate with volunteer formations and nationalist organizations to create elite units.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces has formed a new brigade in cooperation with the representatives of Azov. The 3rd Assault Brigade Azov, created on the basis of the SSO Azov, is a new fully fledged brigade of Ukrainian Ground Forces. The brigade consists of three assault battalions, a tank battalion (T-90s, T-72s), an artillery group and the rear elements.

The well-known 3rd Company Azov of 98th Territorial Defense Battalion, has been reformed under the command of 3rd Assault Brigade Azov. The rest of 98th Territorial Defense Battalion seems to remain in the structure Territorial Defense Forces.

The Regiment SSO Azov likely became part of the brigade, as the official Azov social media accounts continue to refer to the 3rd Assault Brigade as Azov SSO, but recently changed the watermark on photos and videos. The SSO Azov text has been replaced by a three stripe assault rune.

The 3rd Assault Brigade Azov is currently deployed to the area of Bakhmut, and it recently led an assault towards Kurdyumivka, as seen on a video by Azov’s Terra reconnaissance unit released on December 29

  11. Belarus claims Ukrainian missile crashed on its soil

    Quote

"Today, between 10 and 11 a.m., a Ukrainian S-300 missile fell on the territory of Belarus ," the Belarusian defense ministry said on Telegram .

This is the first such incident reported by Minsk since the start of the Russian offensive in Ukraine more than ten months ago, when Belarus serves as a rear base for Moscow's forces.

A team of officers and investigators are currently working on the site to determine the causes of the fall of the machine. Belarusian authorities say they are considering two scenarios: either the missile deviated from its trajectory, mistakenly falling in Belarus, a scenario similar to the "recent incident in Poland" , or it was shot down by the Belarusian anti-aircraft defense.

No information on possible victims has yet been communicated.

In November, the fall of a missile, which killed two people, on a Polish village raised fears of a major escalation and the direct involvement of NATO in the conflict in Ukraine, because Poland is protected by a commitment of collective defense of the Atlantic Alliance. Ukraine had accused Russia, but according to the West and Moscow, the missile in question a priori came from a Ukrainian anti-aircraft defense system that had deviated from its trajectory.

The aim of the mission was to set the conditions for long term democracy and stability, not colonization.  Aggravating internal divisions violently really was not a viable option. We did this in the initial invasion with the Northern Alliance but when the mission shifted to nation building there was a different playbook.

That, and the reality that Afghans could agree in large groups that we were the problem because we sided with another group in power who clearly did not have the best interest of all Afghans in mind, and instead stole everything they could and bolted as soon as western support was pulled.

In simpler terms, we lost in Afghanistan because we supported the losing side with an unworkable overall strategy. Getting Afghans to kill each other better would have been politically untenable back home and likely would have made things worse on the ground.

As it relates to this war, although very different circumstances the spectre of previous debacles hangs in the mind of the entire western world.  Ukraine needs to be nearly spotless in it prosecution of this war, which is frankly almost impossible in any war, or it risks being painted with the “propping up another corrupt losing side” brush.

Zelensky has played this brilliantly so far by shifting and sustaining a narrative of “front edge of freedom”. Ukraine is demonstrating that it is a modern western nation at heart in how it fights, from the treatment of PoWs to targeting.  “One of us, fighting for democratic survival.” is about as good as it gets for a strategic narrative and one we never saw in Afghanistan.

    I couldn't have said it better 👏

  13. Selon le gouvernement ukrainien, « plus de cent [projectiles] en plusieurs vagues » ont été tirés jeudi matin.
    CAESAR !
Loading. You can notice the semi-automatic (hydraulic) loading system aligned with the breech. At this time and as is currently the case, the piston introduces the shell into the chamber. The white blocks are the propellant charges and are introduced after the (automatic) removal of the charging system. Load 6 (6 blocks) is the maximum load, so they shoot at about maximum range. The propellant charges are self-consumed and there is no residue or ejection left after firing, which allows the immediate loading of a new shell. The guy on the right is brought in a new shell which he will put directly on the stretcher while the breech closes. He can press a button on the box just in front of him to launch a new loading procedure which will be triggered automatically (security systems, which I will not detail) as soon as the breech reopens and therefore the gun has fired its shell ( safety system which also allows the opening of the breech only when the shell is fired)
