  1. ...and the "destabilization of the region" myself. Please enlighten us.

Sorry, I did not notice that part. I do not want to elaborate on things that are rather obvious, you can make your own research. Just to point out some things:

Husein was the only entity controlling the country. While human rights were violated, the population lived in a relative peace, stability and even prosperity.

During the war and under the occupation Iraq suffered enormous loses, over 100.000 had died. Now the country is weak and torn by infighting between various religious groups. The quality of life is very low with poverty and frequent bomb explosions. Iraq was a counterbalance to Iran. It is no longer. And Iran's policy clearly reflects it.

On top of this large parts of western Iraq and Syria are currently under control of Islamic State of Iraq and Sham" – ISIS or "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" – ISIL - organization so radical that even Al-Qaeda demands moderation from them.

  2. You stilll did not enlighten us on what "atrocities" you think coaliton forces committed.

You really shouldn't have asked about it. You could start over internet and browse a bit. There are a lot of videos and pictures made both by military and cilvilians in Iraq.

I witnessed a lot of phone/tank/apache camera movies involving killing civilians - just make an effort. Of course you will not find it on Fox news or CNN.

If you need a guidance, there we go:

WARNING: some of this stuff is really drastic, maybe not for soldier but for others for sure.

    For a good starter:

"Come on! Let us shoot" -incident I mentioned earlier, from wikileaks. Killing journalists was not enough, people trying to pick up bodies and wounded were also engaged.

    Some more stuff:

And a video of killing a group probably trying to drop away a weapon. Finishing of the wounded included.

It is only a top of the iceberg.

  3. I used to be one of those troops and we did NOT commit " many atrocities", that is a gross exaggeration, Fact is, if you compare the few atrocities some coalition troops actually did commit to any military in any war, we were angels.

Regardless how 'few' you did commit, it was still 'too much' for a war without any legitimate reason (as we all learned later). I do not even mention the mess current Iraq is.

I understand that average soldier can have good intentions or he simply obeys the orders. Sadly, politicians do not care.

  4. For a real wargamer there are not any 'good' or 'bad' guys, there are just forces and objectives.

US military invaded Iraq - a sovereign country, committed many atrocities on civilians and destabilized the region - and all of this based on fabricated claims. Following this pattern, the fictional conflict depicted in CMSF could also be based on fabricated claims.

Were we really playing the 'good' guys?

Still I enjoyed the experience and I think I will enjoy CMRT.

  5. Tactical AI is important part of the game. You are not supposed to tell individual soldier how to behave in every possible situation. And while I agree that increasing team's formation awareness could bring some benefits I am against giving EVERYTHING to the player. In CM1 we had 'borg spotting'. I am afraid that giving a player tools to impose a strict formation on a team will create a form of 'borg knowledge': soldiers will react based on player's knowledge, not their own. Maybe it is Sudden Strike's way, C&C's way, but certainly not CM way.

There are ways to manage your squad: you can designate scout team and send those 2 soldiers first. You can split your team into 3 parts. You can change facing.

Sometimes your troops will lose their way. Stand in a wrong place. Walk in column straight into machine gun fire. This happens: AI is not perfect, its a price we have to accept.

But if BF introduces what you suggest we will never see green troops going in column against mg nest. Why? Because even conscripts will align themselves perfectly against enemy they don't know about, but player does.

    So...disperse-why not. Forced formation: NO.

  6. I think School of Hard Knocks is an example of bad design. It is not just hard. It is created with an intention of kicking your butt in every way possible and it just does it - but wait, every mission designer can do it - it only depends on how much you want to put on map to eventually wear even the best players.

The problem with this scenario is that regardless of your actions you are going to suffer heavy loses you can't really prevent. Following logic and common sense, the 'cease fire' is the only command you should use in this scenario and ask for more artillery or some air support.

I know 'fairness' may not be something a player should always expect from the tactical war game, but dropping on player's troops several hundred of TRPed mortar shells in a non stop one and half an hour neverending barrage is frustrating and simply not fun for that player. Also, winning the scenario should never depend on finding and killing an artillery spotter or any other forms of 'solving' the scenario on multiple playthroughs.

I do not think there is a single player who won this scenario during his first attempt. And I am pretty sure that there are some new players who gave up on the game after trying this one.
