  1. For those Mac-users interested, I performed a test with symbolic (and hard) links. Not working. Most might find this topic worth of skipping :-] In short: Apparently you can't use a symbolic link for the 'Z' directory inside your CMBN package contents. I'm posting my results in case somebody else is wondering about the possibility. Concern: Mac application is a single file wrapping. When adding mods, one has to use "Show package contents" and create the Z directory inside. Question is, that are these mods gone, when there's a program update? I don't know that yet, and I couldn't find answer from the Forum nor from the FAQ either. (Plus the fact I like nerding around, so I decided to give this a test.) Tested: I created a 'Z-source' directory to my CMBN directory in the Library (same location, where save game and PBEM files are located in). Idea was to store all mod files here, and create only a symbolic (or hard) link inside CMBN program. I was hoping that mod files would survive any updates to the program, and I only needed to renew the link itself. Plus the fact I would have had a direct, searchable view without opening the program file itself. Command: Usage: ln -s {destination to be linked to} {name of the new link} ln -s /Users/{username}/Library/Application\ Support/Combat\ Mission\ Battle\ for\ Normandy/Z-source/ /Applications/Combat\ Mission\ Battle\ for\ Normandy.app/Contents/Resources/Data/Z And how did it work? I got the link up and running, but with few tests I quickly found out it did not work. CMBN runs like there was no mod files at all. Notes: I also checked the read/write/execute rights and the file owner. I went that far that I used sudo with ln command (to have 'root' as the owner) and chown for Z-source directory. No help. I wanted to test a hard link, too. I tried different switches (-n, -f, -t etc). But I found out that ln command has been nerfed by Apple and creating a hard link is a hard thing to do. I got an answer "Z-source is a directory." Daa, yes it was a directory - what did you expect you silly OS? :-P In regular UNIX/Linux system does not care about if the source is a directory or not - for them it is just another file. But apparently not with MacOS X and HFSJ... So I gave up that idea (for time being). Comments? This test turned out to be one of the most useless ones. Perhaps the Mac version even keeps the mod files also through updates, I don't know yet. I shall keep my files backed up elsewhere just in case. But as said, I did it mainly for my own interest, and I wanted to post the results in case somebody else starts pondering about the same. Cheers, geekuma
  2. I was referring to Apple App Store for Mac and CMBN purchased from there. According to Helpdesk there are many such customers who can't successfully create the .ema file (it appears as corrupt). For those interested here's the discussion thread over that topic: http://www.battlefront.com/community/showthread.php?t=105039 Cheers, geekuma
  3. The web sites will be checked - and action started with monsigneur Roc. Too bad I can't create any functional PBEM files with my App Store originated CMBN, but at least I can receive them. :-) /geekuma
  4. I have received both the file and an answer from the BFC Helpdesk. (Thanks!) Apparently we can wait the manual to be distributed with the next App Store CMBN release. I keep my fingers crossed :-) /geekuma
  5. I do appreciate your willingness to help, but as you said - this is a matter of principle. I can use the online manual, but I don't like the current App Store implementation. ;-) Cheers, geekuma
  6. Thanks for the answer! This produces three questions, which I believe are nice to have in the public instead of a support email :-) Lack of download link: Why a regular game buyer has to use Helpdesk for receiving the manual? If App Store does not support providing PDF files, a download link should be a standard issue, IMHO. Lack of information: Why this topic is not covered already in the App Store description? If nobody gets the manual trough that service, it oughta be a standard procedure to inform the customer upfront without this searching & asking confusion, IMHO. Speculative: Can't the location /{HDD}/Users/{Username}/Library/Application Support/Combat Mission Battle for Normandy/ be used for storing the PDF manuals? I see other files created there, too - unless they were created by the game after initial startup. Please don't get me wrong, I do not mean to be complaining just for the "fun" of complaining. But I am somewhat critical that even if there are Apple laid restrictions, why there aren't the obvious work-arounds (customer information, alternative download sources) readily available. Pondering cheers, geekuma
  7. Hi! Thanks for your friendly offer, but I have to decline it. In theory I could also just google&download it - but that is not the thing I want. I am looking for the official version, that should accompany the App Store release. Cheers, geekuma
  8. Thanks for your comment! I covered this in my original post, but for some reason I managed to loose that part when actually pressing "Send". Well, I've got only myself to blame on that. The installation folder would naturally be the obvious starting point. But the Mac installation has only one single file, no folder. One can open this file with "Show Package Contents" - and I already searched that, too. This was prior posting my question here. Just to add in case somebody else wonders: App Store installed only this single file, no other. On the Mac DVD version one would get all the extras, like the manual ;-> Cheerio, geekuma
  9. Plop. I'm an old gamer returning to the CM world with the CMBN. This might sound like a silly question, but I admit: I couldn't find where ppl nowadays look for PBEM action (anything from a QB to Tournaments). So, if I want some PvP action (acronyme used for deliberate annoyance ;-) where should I look into? Cheers, geekuma
  10. You've got some answers here already, and some of them are overlapping with my answer, too. In short: - End a movement turn without a right-clicking: either press +/- to jump next unit or plot additional movement point and then delete it with backspace. - OR enable right hand click or remap it to something else than CTRL. Old really-one-button mouse or laptop or Trackpad: - Open Apple menu - System Preferences... - Mouse / Trackpad - Choose your favourite way of using the "second" button. - Default is CTRL-click, which of course will not work in CMBN because CTRL-click is mapped for quick map movement. Magic Mouse: - Open Apple menu - System Preferences... - Mouse - Enable "second" button by selecting which side (left or right) you want to use. Magic Mouse and Trackpad - 3rd party approach: - Instead of using native System Preferences you could download some 3rd party revision like MagicPrefs. - 3rd party software teaches your pointer to tapdance, fetch your pr0n and cook mean coffee - all at once. They also provide a good possibility of mixing up your pointer to work in reaaaaaally confusing ways, if you don't pay attention to defining the preferences. All pointer tools - Screen Zoom: - Out of the scope of original question, but good to know: you might want to remap your screen zooming. - Screen zooming uses CTRL-mouse scroll by default. It can be quite frustrating if you in the heat of the action accidentally start zooming the sceen in and out... - Open Apple menu - System Preferences... - Mouse / Trackpad - Change the Screen Zoom assist button to something more useful, eg. Command ( or ⌘). Just sayin' Oh, wouldn't it be nice if we could remap hotkeys in CM? This CTRL madness in Mac (why wasn't it mapped to something else by default?) isn't the only example. I keep on hitting L, U, M and other old keys so often it's ridiculous Cheers, geekuma
  11. Hmm, on the hindsight I should have posted this into CM Normandy Tech Support. Dear admins, if necessary please feel free to move this thread into the correct place. Sorry for the trouble, geekuma
  12. Hi all! Before any flaming starts: - Yes, I have registered in and searched from the FAQ. Single related hit, which I can't open. - Yes, I have searched Forum for App Store - no related hits. - No, I haven't read the manual because I don't have one. My background: I'm an old fan of CM series since 1999. Now few weeks ago I returned to the marvelous CM world by downloading CMBN via Mac App Store (btw it was my first ever purchase through that - just to honour my long-time gaming favourite). Mac experience: Installation was very easy, which was surprising. After the hard drive swap re-installation was also painless, which was even more surprising. But: No PDF manual, I have to rely on online version - needless to say how much that su**s. - PDF manual is not available via App Store. On the hard drive I have only the game file. When using "Show contents" I still can't find any manuals. - When searching from FAQ I found a page http://www.battlefront.com/helpdesk/index.php?_m=downloads&_a=viewdownload&downloaditemid=29 which promisingly says "CMBN manual PDF for AppStore" - this is also the ONLY related result I get. - Instead of manual download I get "ERROR: You do not have enough permissions to access this page. Please log in by entering your e-mail address and password." And yes… I have created an account AND I am logged in. As I bet I can't be the only App Store user, this can't be a "bug" for 2 years either. Could you kindly give some advice? Thanks in advance, geekuma
