  1. I don't say that CoH is for "retards lol", but as boche said, they relate to different types of gamers. And I never use "lol".

CM is more like ArmA2, and CoH is more like CoD. Somewhat. :)

I just want CMBN now. I feel like a child asking "are we there yet?" every twenty seconds. I tried playing APK1943 to hold me over in January, but it's so lacking in many key aspects. Did anyone try the same?

  2. After I got CMBO some ten years ago, I couldn't just go back to Command & Conquer.

I have many friends that think good graphics equals realism.

CoH is just one of those micro-manager games, following the same recipe as starcraft and the likes.

What is there to discuss? Let the children have their CoH fling, while us adults continue our long-lasting CM relationship (and, probably, marriage after CMBN).

  3. This was discussed quite a few times in the CMBB forum. To make a long story short, the jury is still out and won't be coming back in near future. My personal opinion is that the book is mostly fiction.

As for Väinö Linna's The Unknown Soldier, it's unfortunate that the English translation is a bastardized version of the original. The story has it that it's US publisher didn't like its tone and hired a couple of Hollywood scriptwriter to sex it up.

My copy is a dual Finish/Norwegian copy from the early 70's.

I loved that book after the first few pages.

Well, I liked the old movie from the fifties. But it seems dated, and doesn't follow the book that well. I really liked two things: Rokka was portrayed better in that one, and the effects were cool, at least for the time (satchel charges, anyone?).

The newest one (1985?) took it too far. Rokka is an old man, not a man in his early thirties.

Oh, and I really liked the Panzer IV in the old one. :P

  4. Maybe he means Steyr, which was an Austrian car manufacturer until the war?

This is a Steyr 1500 staff car. It would seem logical that the author just has gotten mixed with them funny names.

Edit to add that here's a nice page about the Steyr cars used by Wehrmacht, in German but with lots of photos.

It's not a Steyr 1500 he is talking about. Read it again.

It's either a Horch of some sort, or a Sd.Kfz 250 (I seem to remember it was a HT at one point in the book).

The book is filled with weird names and descriptions. I think it's because it has been translated and revised many times over, and originally written for the French public (they wouldn't know that much about Sd.Kfz's or armament). In my Norwegian edition the historian that had been tasked with describing and editing some of the facts about armament and AOPs still managed to overlook the fact that the 88mm FlaK wasn't an automatic "machine cannon".

Just dig into Sven Hazel books. They are truly bizzare, and many believe they are the real deal too.

If you want a good read, check out "Tuntematon Sotilas" (the unknown soldier) by Väinö Linna.

  5. I swear if I once again hear people arguing with me that there should be 5 dead Shermans before 1 Panther gets knocked out I might just shut down the Forum as a form of collective punishment :D

    Steve

Well, there SHOULD be 5 dead Shermies for every one Panther. That seems reasonable.

    Not really. :P

But you might answer this question, Steve.

If there is something "iffy" about features in the game (accuracy, spotting, etc) you will fix it with a patch, right?

    If yes, case closed.

I've been ghosting this thread and it has become very... nonsensical.

"My dad is stronger than your dad!".

I love the Panzer IV. It feels so, for a lack of a better word, retro. But I don't expect it to win every other engagement just because it's german. Better tactics shall win the day!

  6. I dunno about losing potential customers.

How about a locking feature for LOS and make it an option to click on or leave off at before the game starts?

And you get a premium on top of your score for clicking the option on.

    Dan

Is it all about the scores now? K/D stat-whores might like it.

If it's supposed to be hardcore, why give the premium?

Maybe 1 out of 50 customers will find it fun.

By all means, play as you like.

  7. When we're talking about horrific tank crew deaths, I remember reading in a book called "De som falt" (those that fell), in which all the Norwegian KIA voulenteers (SS, Heer, KM, etc) are listed.

Around grenaderhöhe, a junior officer accompanied by some estonian SS soldiers went to inspect a T-34 which was still "intact". They placed their wounded next to the tank and opened the hatches. The Norwegian then grabbed the tank commander by his arms and pulled him out, only to find he had no lower body. At all. It was burnt off.

Then the estonian guy fired up the engine, and due to the damage inside, the driving levers got stuck and spun over the wounded soldiers, turning them into mush.

The Norseman blew his brains out shortly after the war.

I've read many memoirs from the Norwegian voulenteers, and it seems situations like that weren't all that uncommon.

  8. Politics and semantics.

In Norway we are taught that "we" won.

Norway wasn't even part of the war after 1940, and not actually allied to the US or the UK.

The "exile" government was merely a guest in the UK.

We are not taught about what out government did to so called "Tyskertøser" (those who married and/or had children with german soldiers). A large percentage of those children were sent to Germany with the story that their parents died in the holocaust, or lived lives as orphans in Norway.

Collaborators in Norway did not have any rights until the mid fifties. By law.

And a fair share was beaten to death.

We are not to learn these things as children. Which is OK. Let's not ruin the age of innocense. Let's get back on topic! :D

  9. No, I have not.

None of my friends play CM. Never have and never will.

They are more the drinking and having fun types.

I remember getting CMBO when it was released (I was 14 IIRC) and being the only one playing it. And then CMBB a year after it was released, playing only CMBB and going to work for a month. I think I pre-ordered CMAK.
