In the game it can only go trough 64mm also, at 500meters, it could only pierce 138mm wilst in the game he can wade trough 148 if I'm not mistaken.

    Cheers...

I think the Panther's 75 penetration at 500m was 124mm and at 100m was 138mm using standard APCBC. Your figure for 2000m is correct per both Thomas Jentz in Panzertruppen and Guns & Armor by Scott Cunninham. All of this was based on striking at 30 degrees. So based on armor slope these could be greater or less and much Soviet armor was greater than 30 degrees.

    Hi Narses

How did you proceed to get the T3485 vs Tiger ?

I have aways wanted to play a first person tank sim onlinemulti-player. What would you recommend?

The best WW 2 tank sim is still Panzer Elite (my view probably because I assisted in developing over 40 East Front scenarios for the "Ostpak" mod along with Geez's great tank models especially the 1942 Pz III and IV of 3rd Pz Div and BobR's technical work and map creations). There is also a BritPak available. But it came out late in 1999 and the engine is obsolete. It may be available on EBay and I believe there is a site to download all the improvements. I still play it.

I say all the above without having yet played the new Steel Fury (Kharkov 42) which has been released in Russia but not here yet. SF is also releasing a follow-on Steel Fire (Kharkov 43). That sounds very interesting as it involves the SS Pz Korps counterattacking to take Kharkov in Feb/Mar 43. You can check SimHQ webpage for info and the demo download (demo is for SF Kharkov 42). The T3476 interior is great and the crewmen actually function. The loader loads! I found the demo a bit rough with some problems and the English was terrible.

I am waiting for T3485 vs Tiger which I purchased through GoGamer. It is due and should be in the mail next week although that is what GoGamer said 1 month ago and I haven't check up on that. The graphics are outstanding.

Another is Red October that has been out for a several years but I didn't like it and went back to Pz Elite. However I've been told that with new patches it is now much better in regards tanks. Originally I thought it better than but just a little better than tank play in CODUO, etc.

  4. Lots of great comments here.

I tend to agree with TheBrit. Too much micro mgmt. As a Co Cdr, certainly as a Bn Cdr you simply don't need to be doing all this stuff ( I've been there, done that in the Army).

I've been playing the CM series and that has some of the same faults although I find the game much simpler and that the AI seems to react better. Graphics not that bad either. Maybe its just I've been playing CMBB steady since 2002 and then CMAK ( CMBO wasn't quite up to these last 2 and I seldom played it). Actually, I normally develop my own CM battles of a co minus and then go at it. But I must add I fool with those neat Peiper "Blowtorch" scenarios also.

Anyway in TOW I simply have reverted to small, discreet battles using the battle generator and using the mission editor as well. These are truly great editors; on the other hand it takes lots of time by necessity (I like loading my own ammo types).

TOW has done some great stuff here. I love sending one of my pz crew out on a recon while I hide my zug. I wait for him to spot enemy then I try to manuever into a more favorable flank position. Of course it doesn't always work.

In CM if I get the urge to fight a zug of PVIV vs T3485 (silly me) I can set it up in less than 1 minute and add a zug of inf or two plus mortars.

I'm hanging in to see what TOW does next. If they don't soon give me a Pz III G or H, and 2 J's ( short & long with extra armor )for 'Barbarossa' and 1942 I may have a problem with TOW!

I also don't like playing in 1943 with a Panther G. At least need the A.

Btw, I just noticed Steel Fury is talking about a new SF Kharkov 43 (mouthwatering graphics!) and SF Kharkov 42 isn't even released outside the Ukraine/Russia yet. What kind of marketing is this!

Then there is T3485 vs Tiger - I'm still checking my mail box every day for it.

Oh well, back to Pz Elite 'Ostpak' I guess if I want to enter a tank turret.

So you are getting a new machine - nice one. Getting this scenario out has taken up a lot of time, that and finishing off the Strachwitz series. I'll check out your other Russian scenarios soon smile.gif

    Cheers fur noo

    George

I'm trying to download these new scenarios from Blowtorch or The Proving Grounds. I've tried both WinZip and WinRAR. It appears they do not automatically self-extract into CMBB.

I tried putting the CMF file into the CMBB scenario folder and the Dubno map file into BMP folder but still I don't see the scenario (Dubno) appear.

How do you load the individual scenariors into CMBB?

  7. Not sure if this has been covered.

I use crew members of my tanks to scout. This was often done by German crews in the books I've read (Otto Carius, Michael Wittmann, etc.) and I assume in other nations as well.

Of course this depends on the type battle you are involved in. In mostly armor battles I build in the BG if accompanying inf cannot assist I keep my panzers in full defilade and send, usually, the mg gunner out to watch for the approach of enemy armor. Then when they appear I can remount him and try and maneuver to attack a flank.

  8. I've been playing mostly small games of a few units in the Battle Generator & Editor.

I've noticed when I give vehicles a destination they seem to go directly thru trees, knocking them down on the way. In addition they crash thru fenced villages. Didn't notice if they crashed thru the small homes. These appear to be fairly substantial trees and obstacles.

In CM vehicles would, despite plyr orders, avoid many areas of rough or bad terrain - not all, but many - and by default do not enter areas of dense trees. But they would always after avioding obstacles get back to their movement to the ordered goal. This needs fixing.

No tank driver or cdr would let his tank crash into medium sized or even most small trees because of possible damage to his vehicle. So the game should prevent this by having vehicles move around medium to heavy obstacles. Very, very small trees or light fences OK.

Perhaps in an emergency you want to ignore this but then there should be a chance of damage.

    Another rant -

I personally don't like naming every soldier in the game and awarding medals. This is a RTS not a SIM. That works great in a flight sim or could work well in a sim like Pz Elite but not in TOW.

Just my opinions. Maybe I need to play more to get a better appreciation. I'll keep playing.

Great thread on TOW's trenches. These COD type trenches might've been behind the beaches in Normandy or in Citadel but seldom any place else except maybe Sevastopol,Leningrad, Moscow. Too WW1 looking.

It would really be nice to have those trenches as depicted in "Men Against Tanks" as well. They are narrow, in part, to defend against tanks easily knocking them in I believe.

'RockinHarry' - I seem to remember you from Panzer Elite. I worked on the Ostpak mod helping with about 40 of their scenarios. Glad to come across you again.

Yes, did that infamous never publicly released B41 Panzer Elite mod, although Andy McGee adapted it to Ostpak I think anytime in the past. Re ToW forest, I would proceed as I tried in the B41 mod, with more realistic looking and behaving forest ground tiles.

What was you nick name over in Ostpak team? smile.gif </font>

  11. Got it deleted finally.

    I see Sneaksie did respond.

To delete your BG mission names from the SP Battles menu you must delete those entries for your own battles from the campaign XML file in the folder which has all the folder files for SP battles.

I had problems with this because you cannot delete when you open this file in Explorer. I opened instead with notepad then deleted.

WARNING: Good precaution. First SAVE the ORIGINAL campaign file so if you make an error in deleting (I did - took 1 line too much) you can do it over again or compare both to see your error.

REMEMBER: This is to remove the name and background statement from the SP Battles game menu. To remove the actual game files delete the folder that names your scenario.

  12. Thought my question on this in TOW thread had been answered but still having a problem.

I know how to delete a BG created single scenario but I can't seem to get the title off the Single Plyr Battles list. At first one overwrote the other and I thought, OK that works for me, but then it reappeared and I have 2 titles still there although if you select they are blank because I deleted them in the Missions folder of the game.

Anyone know how to get the titles off the Single Plyr Battles menu?

It just so happens, the first mission I wanted to generate was an Ardennes mission, and the US were on the defensive, so I wanted to throw some defensive structures down.

And if they can't be used, they shouldn't be in the list. It's quite a basic thing to do as a programmer. The list should be able to be populated and repopulated on the fly...therefore if a user selects a force where defensive structures are not allowed, they are removed from the list.

It would've saved my time and other peoples who have posted a response because if what you say is the case, then it isn't actually a bug.

US and other Allies' fortifications in Italy and France would've been so-called "hasty." Mostly individual fox holes for a couple riflemen or larger ones for crew-served weapons perhaps. I say that without yet having looked at the BG's fortifications possibilities. If the game doesn't provide those (as CM does) its too bad.
  14. The "BG" is great. I was very surprised and delighted to see how easy it was to use. Thanks!

I set up a simple little trial game called "PzIV Attack." Just 4 or 5 tanks on each side and a couple of inf sqds.

The game was saved automatically to "Single Plyr Battles" and sits there now.

How do I delete it ? Its nothing I want to keep, in fact most games built in the "BG" I assume I'll eventually delete.

I tried looking at Battle Generator and Mission Editor and even went into TOW files but could not find "PzIV Attack."

Anyone know? Thanks for the help.

  15. These are great. Can't wait to get them added ! The "Firefly" is wonderful.

I would suggest maybe changing that 'late F' to a G or H. About all that's needed is an exhaust fan on turret roof, more armor and a slightly different cupola. 600 G's and 308 H's were produced prior to the invasion of the USSR. G and H's need to be in the game.

All 435 F models were built ( Sept 1939-July 1940 ) with the 3.7cm gun but some were uparmed to the 5cmL42 later after the 5 cm was introduced in 1941.

The G was introduced in April 40 and the first 50 had the 3.7cm gun and the rest (550) all had the 5cm. They also introduced a new cupola. The H started production in Oct 40 (until April 41) and 308 were produced with superstructure and hull armor doubled to 60mm front and rear.

These tank production figures do not count special vehicles like "command" tanks.

This info from 'Panzer III' by W. Spielberger and 'Encyclopedia of German Tanks of WW2' by Chamberlain & Doyle.

  16. Correct. Was with the US Army at Lajes years ago.

Didn't you ever play "Panzer Elite"? Was produced in Germany in 1999 by "Wings" now "JoWood.". Is still quite good especially since modders redid tank models and skins adding everything from 'Jagdtigers' to the 'Maus' !!

    Must check out SF.

Nah, the Uberpatch adds a new campaign in normandy but no new units.

Quick battle generator and chance to fight AI controled units in multiplayer maps is the best it brings for me.

There is a 88mm antitank of 1943, not the flak 88.

You will have to do it the hard way, hit it from the sides or in their arse. tongue.gif

Setubal is nice, i live in Amadora, in the other side of Lisboa.

Maybe i will visit Tbilisi some day. :D

We lived 3 yrs in the Azores and have Portuguese friends who have a home there and in Setubal. We've been north & west of Lisbon to Cintra, Cascais, Santarem and Fatima. Been east to Evora as well.

My dream is to visit the Bovington (UK)& Kubinka tank museums. I have been to the German Pz Museum in Muenster. It is very nice. There is a good tank museum at Samur as well - have you been?

From 99 to 05 I was part of the Panzer Elite "Ostpak" mod team and helped with over 40 scenarios for OP. I still play CM BtoB and AK on a regular basis.

Waiting now to see what Steel Fury and T3485 vs Tiger is like. SF will have an editor but not TvsT I hear. </font>
