  1. There used to be a patch to make ingame script visable again, something to do with anti-aliasing makes all the data boxes in the game go unreadable pale coloured type. Does anybody know the name of this patch, is it still available? or is there a way to disable anti-aliasing in win7 for CM:AK and CM:BB version 1.04 ?
  2. great to hear Now all we need is for somebody to re-do that Napoleonic CM version in win7 compatible code oh, and while i have my wish book open, There was an old game called Great Naval Battles Vol 2 3 and 4 , that was the greatest ww2 naval game ever made, except it crashed constantly, and the company that developed it went under before they could get the new 3d version (Burning Steel was the Title) sorted out. It wouldnt even play, it just crashed immediately. Vol 1 was a waste of time, Vol 2 was the battle for Guadalcanal, vol 3 was the Med/Atlantic battles and Vol 4 was the rest of ww2 in the pacific. The games' concept was awesum, the programming, not so much
  3. how about some screenshots and/or an update on CM:Normandy progress ?
  4. im not doing the mod , Oudy is There was a 2nd stowage bin added to the rear of the normal stowage bin on the Vc turret , but Oudy's mod isnt really cosmetic other then the gun barrel , just functional
  5. ya i figured the turret thing was going on(making fireflys from other models by switching turrets)but i hadnt seen it written anywhere. There was a Ic firefly as well ,or a hybrid Ic/IIc used mainly in Italy and was probably the result of them shipping 17pdr turrets to Italy and then installing them on hulls that were already in service or in repair shops in Italy. Italy had a way lower priority for fireflys then NW Europe , by the end of 1944-Early 45 in NW europe there was getting to be 2 fireflys and 2 short75s per Tank Troop(platoon)
  6. Glad to help , The more weapon systems added to the game , the better for all of us I dont have the knowledge to mod files , i do have some of the needed info on vehicles i can add to the pile That picture that Wokelly posted is a modern collectors restored firefly i think , they added extra chunks of plate to the hull and right front side of turret shortly after the fighting started in Normandy and they are missing on the 1 in the photo , The commander is also a department store dummy from the looks of it heheheh . That may also be the slightly smaller turret that was used mainly on the IIc(hard to tell unless you see them beside each other) , altho the hull is correct enough for a Vc . Modern resto's are cobbled together from whatever parts can be scrounged from AT gunnery ranges , and those parts are in real bad shape after being a target for modern AT weapons for 20-40 years , so most modern resto's are very unreliable as to model and variant info [ June 10, 2007, 11:43 PM: Message edited by: nev403 ]
  7. What was the difference tween the A3 and A4 wokelly? The hulls look identical, the A3 short 75 should work as a Vc too. The A2 had a bit thicker upper front hull armour and different slope then the A3 A4(64mm@47deg in the A2 vs 51mm@56deg in the A3 and MkV) .It must be the A4 version im thinking of that the US didnt use much. I had forgotten that there was an A4 Where do i know your handle from? are you in ww2ol ? [ June 10, 2007, 08:01 PM: Message edited by: nev403 ]
  8. The MkV hull had 51mm@56 deg slope on the upper hull, the lower hull unit with the final drives in it was where the different thickness was , the cast nose on the version you used is 102mm , the IIc Firefly had this same cast lower hull , but had the upper cast hull from the M4A1 i think it was called in US service. The MkV had the thinner lower hull that was in 3 sections bolted together with 2 flanges running vertically up the center of the lower hull section (same as Grant/Lee/Canadian Ram) that was the 51mm @15 deg nose , the MkV was same as early US M4A3 with short 75mm or US M4A4 , you used the M4A3 76mm which has a completely different turret , a better choice to convert to a Vc Firefly would be the M4A3 with short 75mm US M4 = Brit Sherm MkI with small size turret US M4A1 = Brit Sherm MkII(cast upper and lower hull and small size turret)this is best version to mod into IIc Firefly US M4A2 = Brit Sherm MkIII(64mm upper hull at less slope and 102mm cast lower hull and larger size turret US M4A3 short 75mm = Brit Sherm MkIV This version was hardly used by brits US M4A4 = Brit MkV(hardly used by US , they considered it a poor variant, used in pac by USMC to some degree) US M4A3 76mm ,is the model you used which has the 3rd turret design and the thick cast lower hull. The M4A3Esomethings were the improved suspension versions with HVSS suspension and wider tracks, All the M4A3Esomethings used the 3rd turret design but i dont think the brits ever did use that 3rd turret(or used it in very limited numbers) ,there was a total of 5 different tracks used on various sherman models, 3 skinny ,1 slightly wider , and 1 very wide used on the last of the M4A3E models(E8 called the Easy8) , 3 different turrets with 2 or 3 different glasis plates , and a cast upper hull and 2 or 3 different welded upper hulls, and 2 different lower front hulls , 1 cast and 1 bolted. There was probably at least 5 different engines used ranging from a aircraft radial air cooled used in Lee/Grants and 1st gen Sherms to 5 GM industrial inline 6 cyls all geared together at the crankshafts to make a 30 cylinder, 2 were flat opposed , 2 were in a Vee and the 5th was straight up . The Brits installed diesel engines in some of thier MkIII's used in north africa and Italy to try and reduce fire hazard , but it was ammo storage that led to the fires , not the gas engine As i said before , the various models soon became a hodge podge of parts cobbled together in repair shops , in some cases , M4A1 cast hulls would have the rear 1/2 replaced with flat welded plates . Only 1 Sherman in the Canadian Armd Corps made it from Normandy to end of the war without being knocked out , It was a tank from the Sherbrooke Fusiliers Regt. 2nd Can Armd Bgde [ June 10, 2007, 09:20 PM: Message edited by: nev403 ]
  9. The 77mm was a detuned or "low recoil" 17pdr , kinda 1/2 way tween the hot 17pdr and the US 3inch , the firefly should use the 76.2mm Mk2 gun. All 3 guns had a different shell casing and ammo was not interchangable There was MkIIc firefly and MkVc the IIc used the early cast hull and the Vc was based on the MkV sherman with welded hull ,i cant remember off hand which US version the Mk V equated to , the US considered it an poor varient and didnt use it much. The Vc had the same lower front hull as the Lee/Grant/Canadian Ram with the 3 sections bolted together with flanges , not the thicker cast lower front hull shown in the Sherman image at top of this page . The US didnt adopt the full power 17pdr because they considered it dangerously overpowered and paid the price in normandy when the 3inch showed itself to be little better then the short 75mm , because it used the same shatter prone APHE projectile. They even tried removing the HE charge and filling the void with lead but it didnt help much . Fireflys were issued just before the normandy invasion and the crews had fired only a few rounds on the range before going to france , they soon found in combat that the gun would jam after firing a bunch of rounds rapid fire , the solution was to drain 1/2 the oil out of the recoil buffer because it overheated and expanded and prevented the gun from recoiling fully and ejecting the empty case [ June 10, 2007, 04:39 AM: Message edited by: nev403 ]
  10. thnxs slaphappy i must admit ,the tank battle in steel torrent is pretty good , but it would only be better if there was a lot more tanks [ June 10, 2007, 03:19 AM: Message edited by: nev403 ]
  11. I started wargaming in 1968 or 69 when a buddy of mine bought an Avalon Hill game called Anzio and we moved from boardgames to computer games when computers had evolved to 486 level , that was when computer wargames started to surpass the detail and visual presentation that i had with the old 'map on the table' and im not all that impressed so far with ToW , the graphics are excellent, but it is a big step backwards from the combat mission series(the best tactical wargame system that has ever been invented, combining the best of turn based with the best or realtime), back almost to the days of "close combat a bridge too far" ,usable map is way too small(and being able to see into the distance but not send a unit there is very very frustrating) , forces involved are way too small(almost the same level of individual detail is avail in CM but on a vastly larger map and unit size), and command and control is way too difficult, also , there is no provision to replay what just happened to your unit in 1 part of the map while you were concentrating on the situation in another part of the map , he just ends up dead and you have no chance to find out why. It is the video replay ability in CM games and the 'stop every 60 secs' system that enables you to control a vastly larger battle force in a game with such a high degree of detail . Inf in ToW have virtually no effective cover anywhere on the field except for hiding in deep grass or wheat field , They cant occupy buildings and that is rediculous, there has never been a war game with Inf in it where Inf cant occupy buildings, the stone walls that should be excellent cover seem to block line of outgoing fire even if it is a low wall but dont seem to provide much protection from incoming fire unless line of sight is completely blocked(high wall). I think the programming time would have been better spent upgrading CM series of games to this level of graphics quality , add the new 'shell burst' effects(very well done in ToW) , add the Armour graphics(altho CM armour is already very high quality, this is a step up in ToW) , and all 10 Inf as graphics individuals to the combat mission series of games and it would be a much better game then ToW . i would also like to see the CM series maps enlarged to 10km x 10km size and the maximum number of units in a battle enlarged to 3 Inf battalions( Inf Brigade) and a tank Squadron per side . Add in the graphics improvements and some of the functionality from Theater of war(individual inf team members) ,re-do the 1st 2 versions of CM as upgraded add-ons to CMAK rather than 3 separate games so it all becomes 1 big ubergame with terrain and equiptment and AO's from all 3 games available to create maps with. Im not just knocking your work here , i bought 2 copies of ToW and i dont consider it a loss, and i will also do anything i can to support future work on this game , but you already have an unbeatable gaming system in the CM series , why not add the best parts of this program into the CM series and end up with a tactical wargame that no other game in the world can hold a candle to
