  1. Would your CDV licence code work on a non-CDV version? If it would, then all you'd need would be the e-licensed setup file: you already own the (licence to the) product, and wanting the non-crippled version is quite understandable - isn't it? I've had both and I don’t think there's actually any significant difference between the versions that can’t be overcome with the patch. Sure, I resent being treated like a child because someone dropped a clanger and appointed a German company to distribute a pan-European product without actually understanding the issues involved, but downloading the e-Licence version solved that annoyance. On the other hand maybe “you’re having a laff! Is he having a laff?”. In which case, I’ve been had.
  2. I *think* I see less experienced units (esp. green) bogging more often than more experienced units, but this might not be the case in reality. I tend to keep e.g. green trucks to roads whilst letting regulars and veterans go cross country: but I've no idea if it really makes a difference. I suppose you could run a series of tests ....
  3. If I knew someone well enough to not like their attitude, and depending on how bad their attitude was, I might well walk up to someone and call them an idiot. It would depend on whether or not they were an idiot I suppose!
  4. I've only ever seen two other people in TPG chat - and they were both asleep. So far, at various times of the UK daytime, it's been empty ....
  5. I'm pretty sure that's NOT right. IME an HQ unit with e.g. a 2 star command rating can 'pinch' command of e.g. a mortar unit from a lesser rated HQ unit even when further away. It's happened to me in two of my recent PBEM games. To test this if you want (I've seen it 'for real' so I don't need to) I suggest using a 2* and 0* HQ unit and one mortar on flat terrain. Place the 0* HQ unit at the maximum distance from the mortar while still retaining C&C. Place the 2* unit out of C&C range, then move the 2* unit towards the mortar until you see it 'pinch' C&C. I think you'll find that distance is greater than the 0* unit's distance.
  6. Eh? This seems to be a quote from one of my posts followed by something pretty unintelligble. Is this some kind of quaint 'forum dialect' that I need to try to understand, or can I just ignore these comments, as they really don't seem to add much to the meaningful contents of the thread?
  7. I hadn't remotely imagined that CM simulated this kind of thing (by whatever mechanism). Thanks once again for the invaluable insights and time spent crafting lengthy replies. I'll see how well I can put it into practise. Also, thanks for the suggestion re hotseat experimentation.
  8. This bit I think I understand: if you can't be seen you're going to be hard to see! But this puzzles me ... why is it so? How can one tell? How did you come to this knowledge? Is it written or deducible from writing, or is it the product of experience through experimentation? It's this invaluable level of detailed knowledge that seems critical to elevate play from 'slugfest' to 'combat' ....... Thanks for some more fantastic insights ......
  9. This is one of the most informative threads (whining apart) I've read about using infantry to achieve what I've hitherto found impossible. Thanks to the contributors. There are bits that I understand, bits that I don’t understand but expect to with practice and at least one bit I just don’t get at all, and I’d be really grateful for clarification or pointers to other relevant threads: Am I right to assume they can’t hurt it because of their lack of firepower at that range, and because of the ‘dug-in’ cover multiplier? But what if there are several squads? And some mortar support? Isn’t it “bye bye HMG” then? What puzzles me most, however is the “can’t even locate it” comment: once it opens fire it’s going to be spotted isn’t it? And then – as above – “bye bye HMG”? I’m just getting to grips with the fabulous game, and I keep having to put it down because I get frustrated by my lack of understanding – but I keep returning to it. As a smart guy, I always thought I’d have made a great officer: I rather think the opposite after a few games! Any helpful pointers / comments much appreciated!
