  1. Ah I see. yeah the advance was grueling indeed. the worst part is that it matches what I have read (been reading a few Bn war diaries and personal accounts). What impresses me the most is that most of the scenario plays out like any ordinary british assault that I read about. So you really got that right!

    One other odd thing that I came to remember now is the Artillery in the begining. you get 4th Bns Mortar platoons, thats totally fine. but then you get 75mm pack howitzers? whats up with that? no 75th pack howitzers was used in NWE by the british as far as I know (excluding the airborne lads). Wouldn't ordinary 25pdrs be more representative?

    I will definitely give this scenario another go when the patch comes out!

    Here is the ending screen of my battle, as you can see I got some heavy casualties...

  2. To my suprise I just finished this with a Mayor Victory with 35 mins to go and not even started to attack the town itself. I just cleared Hill 274.

    One reflection is that you should add allot of german reinforcements that will spawn after the game time is up so the overall morale of the germans are a bit stronger. was a bit suprised to see the town surrender after just som arty on it and with tanks on the outskirts and nothing else.

    But it is a great (and huge!) scenario and I recommend it to anyone who want to play a larger Brittish scenario!

  3. Decals are available in some vehicles in Steelbeasts Pro PE. Guess what most modders do with them?... REMOVES them! to much pain in the *ss to work with and often placed in wrong places compared to where you want the decals to be.

    So I rather have the markings as a new layer/overlay then work with decals and alpha layers again.

    DC: your work is impressive! :) You haven't thought about adding links to every mod here so you get directed to the repository directly?

  4. Yes, to be precise: trying to learn how to!

    Right now I'm trying to get the hang of AI plans, waiting for CMBN 2.0 with the overlay feature to do the maps. meanwhile Im doing the research for the scenarios.

    By the look of it right now it will be a 6 mission campaign, thinking of splitting up Tilly-Sur-Seulles to a 2 mission mission, same with Bois de St German, then it will be a 8 scenario campaign.

  5. hehe yeah, "logic" and "army" just doesn't match, kind of like "military" "intelligence" :)

    The sources you have, are they for up to 20th Aug or after 20th Aug? Because after 20th Aug when the brigade became a fixed part of 49th I can understand they got those numbers.

    What makes 56th so hard to figure is that they were a independent brigade that was army corps asset and therefore didn't follow division/brigade logic (obviously...)

    But so far I haven't found a single error in this book (compared to the Essex War Diary and the book "The Essex Regiment" by T.A Martin so I believe it is accurate. at least for the period 6/6 to 20/8. But it is your mod so you do what you feel most comfortable with :)

    Im hunting for a picture, so far without luck. 56th brigade just didnt like to get in on pictures :)

  6. Hmmm, do you have any photos? I'd be quite interested.

    The information I originally found (3 sources), which seemed to make sense, had the numbers as 55, 56, 57 (which would be the battalions in a senior brigade within an infantry division), whereas the numbers 67, 68, 69 were used to indicate the battalions in a junior brigade (again, within an infantry division).

    I found it difficult to locate primary refs for the 56th Independent, so any additional info is much appreciated and can be easily incorporated.

    Indeed, finding info about 56th Ind. Inf. Brig is hard as hell.. pretty much just this book is around and then some few books about the separate Battalions. Hardly any pictures or anything around... :/

    That update, is that for the Brigade when it was independent or when it was a part of 49th Polar bear?

    because I got some info regarding the vehicle number markings for when the brigade was independent.

    From the book "The 56th Infantry Brigade and D-day" by Andrew Holborn page 68.

    ""56th Brigade vehicles had a brown square painted on the mudguard and white numbers painted on these, 69 denoting 2nd Essex, 68 2nd Gloucester and 67 for 2nd South Wales Bordereres. All the vehicle had a big white stars across the width of the vehicle for identification and a sphinx on a yellow background on the other mudguard."

  8. Nice find Erwin! Well you can not remove the material superiority from the equation, but still i agree with Scott that it was the auftrag tactic that lost the war for the Germans. Especially the part where it taught the soldiers to always think aggressive. Sure army's don't win by sitting tight doing nothing, but the German aggressiveness became predictable. My focus is mainly on the British sector of North West Europe in 1944 but after every British attack there was a German counterattack.

    And that counterattack was always expected so the first thing the Brits did was to dig in and range the artillery and then just pulverized the German counterattacks as they materialized. So the Germans just sent units into a certain failure that they could have used later on to defend a new line of defense. Sure sometimes the counterattacks did manage to send the Brits hurrling back for old lines, but most of the times German units was used up in pointless counterattacks, and the aggressive auftrag tactic was the reason for it. So in a way you can say that the auftrag tactic shortened the war...

  9. Well, I have a dream about doing a campaign thats centers around 2nd Bn, Essex Regiment in Normandy. There is enough for abought 8-9 semi-historic scenarios in that campaign. But learning the scenario editor is a big curve and Im having a hard time to motivate me to sit down and learn it when I have so much else to do.

    atleast I got the title ready "The Pompadours in Normandy" :cool:

  10. Not this one but I do notice a few move orders being changed to quick by the AI.

    that one is TacAI. if the unit comes under fire etc (just bypasing bullets not intended for them) makes them change command, they want to get out of the area faster then move would make them.
