If you do, then it's because you don't understand much about how software and hardware interact.

Combat Mission only has one base of code to work from. It makes the same exact calls on one card as any other card. No difference. So if the code is doing the same thing on EVERY system, yet some cards aren't behaving while other identical cards are, the fault obviously lies someplace other than our code. As I've said, there are things that our code could be doing to make matters worse for some people, but the fact is that if it was our code ALL users with an OpenGL card would be experiencing a problem, or at the very least all 8800 users would be. This is not the case so it is obviously not due to a fundamental problem on our end.

    It really is that simple.

Well Steve, I'm sorry but I get a bit annoyed here. I had an ATI card back in the good ole days and then it was the ATI drivers fault that the fog was not displayed correctly in CMx1. All other games ran perfectly with my X800 card. Now it's the Nvidia 8800 drivers fault that CMSF runs at single digit fps. All other games run like a charm. I work with software development too and blaming drivers may be OK for some weird card than nobody uses but regarding the Nvidia 8xxx line it can hardly be denied that it's the most popular card out there, and it has been so for almost a year! Got mine in november last year.

When the most popular card on the market behaves weird in a game it's something that should have been fixed in the beta phase, according to me at least! It does not matter if there is something that is not working as expected according to the OGL specs, all the other developers have worked around it in that case... Why does almost all other games run at 50+ fps on my rig on maximum settings (excluding FSX)? Keep on looking for a fix but blaming the drivers will not get any sympathy from me at least (rather the opposite). If the 8xxx line was brand new and released AFTER CMSF it would maybe be valid to blame the drivers.

It's not like the graphics in CMSF are that bleeding edge either. Check out World in Conflict, it runs amazingly on my rig at maxed out settings and the number of polys rendered there are way higher than CMSF. Don't go blaming that you have more advanced AI than WiC etc as CMSF clearly runs OK on older cards etc.

Sorry for the harsh tone but I really think that this is your problem...

    Regards /Mazex

Ahh, I envy you. It's like finding a novel you like somewhat and then discover that the author has written an epic trilogy some years ago that you have not read...

Hmm, that analogy is maybe not that good as the last novel that's not up to par with the olde loved ones cannot be undone (or patched) as in the case with computer games... Wait - that's maybe something for authors in the future? Patch the novels after release to get quick money when needed? Think of it: "War and Peace version 1.03 - Chapter 6,7 and 13 rewritten due to inconsistencies in the story. Rewrote the end completely due to whining forum nerds".

  4. I sure is annoying, and if they follow the 8x8 grid in a "hexbased" manner it would be better to show those squares. Cards on the table gents! It would be less annoying for me at least... I don't really get this 1:1 representation of soldiers and bullets when the "real" 3D world feels further away than it did in CMx1. The underlying grid must be available for debugging purposes - give us a checkbox or a key-combo to reveal it!

  5. OK, I waited before whining about this one as there where promises of clearing up the pathfinding issues in 1.03. This one really annoys me even though it most of the time does not kill my uits but it's a massive immersion killer for me. When I start up a map like "Allahs Fist" for example and order my M1:s to move between the palm trees (a course that is something like 30 degrees NE). Immediately after they start moving, they stray far to the right of the path I assigned to them in a course that seems to be more like 45 degrees. This seems to continue until arriving to the point where they can go straight to the north (0 degrees) to get to the destination I plotted for them... At this point they will have to travel THROUGH the palm trees to the right of the gap I wanted them to use. The path they choose (disobeying a clear and simple order from their commander!) looks more like the path units would have to take on a hex based game when trying to go 30 degrees.

The whole thing is getting very annoying as plotting a path in an almost flat desert should not be that hard - and there is NO reason to NOT take the shortest path to the destination that I have assigned to them (following the GD path!). This whole thing distracts me a lot as the feeling of control of their movements is completely lost. They end up among the trees trying to zig zag between them and I sit there swearing.

Apart from that 1.03 feels like a good step forward, but the FPS seems even worse on my 8800GTX than before on maps like "Allahs Fist" (I know that it's not in the list of fixes until 1.04)... I've been forced to go down to "Improved" in my settings for textures and models instead of "Better" that I used before to be able to play the game.

    Hi guys,

This was released today. There appears to be several patches which MIGHT help out some of you guys that are having framerate and jumpy mouse cursor problems with nVidia cards. Unfortunately, as can be plainly seen there are some serious problems with nVidia stuff at the moment that is way beyond our control. Hopefully this will get you guys the help you need.

We'll look into them this weekend, but you guys might want to play around with these on your own:

Notification of Microsoft Vista Hotfix 940105 - Now available for download (Tools/Utilities)

    Description:

    Hotfix available at: http://www.nvidia.com/object/windows_vista_hotfixes.html

Microsoft has just made a very important Windows Vista hotfix available for download: "Virtual address space usage in Windows game development". This Vista hotfix is recommended for GeForce 6, 7, and 8 Series customers running DirectX 9 and DirectX 10 applications.

This hotfix resolves abnormal application behavior such as crashes and extremely low frame rates when running some 3D applications at very high graphics settings. This issue is not limited to, but has been most commonly noticed on high-end graphics cards and the following applications: Battlefield 2, Battlefield 2142, Civilization IV, Company of Heroes, Half-Life 2, Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle Earth II, Supreme Commander, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas, and some highly anticipated upcoming titles.

Again, the hotfix is available at:

    http://www.nvidia.com/object/windows_vista_hotfixes.html

We recommend that you always stay up to date with the latest hotfixes from Microsoft.

    Version:

    940105

    Post Date:

    8/31/2007

    Graphics Processor:

    General

Thanks for the linkage and prescriptive fix, but I'm involved in considerable non-game-related software development, and Vista is looking more forbidding all the time, at least as a host environment for applications such as yours.

I STRONGLY suggest that users who are forced into adopting the new OS consider an alternative, dual-boot configuration in the short to intermediate term. IMHO, anything else is simply courting frustration and/or disaster.

Lets hope that the terrain can hide stuff you can't see either <ahttp://community.battlefront.com/uploads/emoticons/default_wink.png' alt=';)'> Z-buffering/culling seems to work very bad in some cases. See this this post for more details. I think that in some cases this causes more problems than poor LOD:s.

  8. OK, did some testing on the machines available in my home (excluding servers ;) ), testing with "Sitting Duck's" settings:

My own rig (Asus Striker Extreme Mobo, 2Gb RAM, C2Duo 3.0Ghz, 8800GTX (see post above)): 11 fps

My Media Center (Asus A7N8X-DL Mobo, 1Gb RAM, AMD 3000+, ATI X800Pro 256): 4 fps

    My wifes (Asus A7M266 Mobo, 1Gb RAM, AMD 2000+, ATI 9600Pro 256): 6 fps

OK, the scores are all lousy but the ATI X800Pro amazingly looses out to the old crappy AMD 2000+/ATI 9600Pro system... This is on rather minimum settings.

I really understand the pain of you guys on old systems, as the mouse control etc was crappy on my wifes rig and the media centre. At least that works OK on my rig.

Worth pointing out is that no game logic can be blamed in this test. The round (which is turn based) has not even started yet so it's just plain rendering. This engine needs a lot of work... On my system it is rather OK as the fps is much better in most other cases - but on the other two it hurt bad!

    /Mazex

  9. Well, I get 10 fps on your settings (and on any other setting) at the startup view. If I look to the left (where my own forces are) the fps suddenly accellerates to 120 or somthing just as the ridgetop on the left side goes out of view. There is something nasty that isn't LODDED away out there in the distance smile.gif

I have the infamous 8800GTX which obviously has some serious problems with this game - every other game I have run like silk at almost any settings...

    My system:

    Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 (@3.0Ghz - 1200Mhz FSB)

Asus Striker Extreme NForce680i SLI MB

    Asus GeForce 8800GTX 768Mb

    2 x 1Gb Corsair PC6400 XMS2 XTREME CAS4 @900Mhz 4-4-4-15 2,1 Volt

    1 x RAPTOR 150GB + 2 x Raptor 74Gb (raid 0) + Hitatchi T7K500 320GB

Creative SB X-Fi Xtreme Gamer Fatal1ty Professional

Dual boot - Windows XP SP2+ and Vista64 Ultimate

P.S I have NO crap on my system, it's clean from running processes accept the minimum needed. No spyware - no nothing. All drivers are the latest available and all MS patches applied etc. Runs like a charm with everything else.

P.P.S The benchmarks above are for XP, haven't tried it in Vista yet - gotta do that now...

EDIT: OK, tried it in Vista64 and I had the same performance there (or maybe a bit worse) 8 fps at the startup. There seems to be some serious Z-buffer/culling problem with the 8800GTX. Even if I move down to one of the "valleys" at the right hand side of the map and stands at place where my view is completely obscured by sand, the FPS still drops to 8-10 while looking in the bad guys direction. When looking left it goes up to 35 or something.

The 8800GTX should be four times faster than the 7xxx cards in regards to Z-culling so there is something rotten in the kingdom of Denmark!

That's just the problem... we can't make someone see something in a positive light if they don't want to view it that way. RT play is a huge advance, and many hate it so much that they slam it without having even tried it. How can we "show off" something if the person refuses to even look at it? Same thing with people saying the game is a "clickfest". It's an emotional reaction to something they percieve, and there is no amount of showing them what to look for that will change their minds.

I've said it before, though. If we had CMx1 style QBs, WeGo TCP/IP, and no RealTime I bet you we would not have had such a negative reaction from a segment of our CMx1 customer base even if NOTHING else was different. But since they are in a foul mood, everything we've done is fair game for criticism. Even the stuff that, in our opinion, they should be celebrating.

I posted this some time ago. I gave ONE order for each of my platoons and won the battle with 125 kills against 3 losses... That's nine clicks (one double click at each platoon to select it and then a move order). The paths they used to get to their detinations where rather amusing and the piling of burning and clipping vehicles was too...

  12. Well, I've been playing computer wargames since 1982 and I've been enjoying BFC:s games since the public beta of CMBO. I'm really sorry to say that I agree with a majority of his comments, even though I would rate it at 6.5 or something. As many others have said this game would have benefited from a public beta around this point of the code state (1.01). It has a strong beta feeling with lacking tool tips etc that really should be there etc (or alpha as a beta should be feature complete). I guess a fairly stable game could have been released in Q1 2008 or something after that. What really annoys me is the babysitting of the units to avoid TacAI messups and the broken pathfinding etc. What he says about this sums up MY THOUGHTS about the game well. There is so much potential but the bugs has made me stop playing the game a long time ago until 1.02 is released. I'm thinking of waiting longer than that (1.04?) to not "waste the campain" on the current code.

I do however have confidence in that we will have a great game in version 1.07 or something. I think he could have lingered more on that track which he didn't. It is however sad that this game was released now and not in 6 months or so... Another setting wouldn't hurt either so the return to WWII with a properly patched base engine is maybe the right time to fill the popcorn bowl for an all night session?

Well, if you are finally getting that brand new Ferrari and notices that the V8 engine is only running on 3 cylinders, you don't send a polite mail to Maranello praising the new rear view mirrors?

I'm confident that a number of patches will get all cylinders running as the otherwise spectacular car deserves it. To bad it's yellow too as real Ferraris are red. At the other hand, we'll get the red one in the second game of the series. Let's hope it gets a V12 too...

Nope, not serious at all actually smile.gif Just trying to spend some time waiting from CMSF... As there are a lot of finns around here in the forum it's always fun to bicker a bit over old times ;)

The only serious comment about Sweden vs Finland is that we never nag seriously about finns in Sweden but somehow it's very popular amoung finns to nag seriously about swedes... We take no real offense though as we have opressed you for those 700 years, banning people from speaking finnish etc. Nothing to be proud of!

Well, you may have a point there, but still:

Russia has tried a number of times (Sweden has had 8 wars with Russia since 1500, and was considered Russias arch enemy until 1809), as well as the danes, the germans, the french, the poles etc. The danes (assisted by dutch soldiers) lost one of their final trials in 1676 a few hundred yards from where I sit writing this (Lund). 1300 dutch soldiers where butchered on the field next to my house after surrendering (there where 9500 casualties in total after the battle of Lund, 6500 danish and 3000 swedish). There where skulls (probably dutch soldiers) found when they built my house last year, so hard empirical facts nearby prove that they have tried smile.gif

  19. Well, I don't have a problem with the Peng threads as they can be rather amusing if there is nothing else to read. What I don't understand is why they are here in the CMSF forum... At least not until the game is released?

The really good thing about them is that you all is quiet on the western front if one of the Peng threads is on top, and you can safely move on to another forum without missing any interesting...
