  1. Frenchy,

I don't think there is a "master file" of call signs.

Best bet is to find the unit nickname.

That's what most of these call signs are anyway.

It shouldn't be too difficult for the Division HQ's or the combat arms regiments but I don't know if you'll ever find them for the support units.

Especially for old WW2 deactivated divisions.

If you are using it for gaming background purposes you can probably get away with using current US Army support units as a guide.

Their call signs are things like "Provider, Band Aid, Muleskinner" and don't necessarily start with the same letter (like the HQ and Regiments do).

  2. ....is something only actual servicemen can answer.:)

With luck one might just stop in to let us know...

they don't use to put their feet on the ground, so no combat helmet to worry of.

    Death before dismount :D

I wore one to a Halloween costume party and found it very annoying because I could barely hear anything.

 A party? with real people? :D

The current model helmets have a built in external mic that you click on to hear outside conversations (only works when plugged in, I think)

  3. If the guy isn't supposed to dismount then he shouldn't have a CVC, so that's a bug :) I found that I had the "tank" version of the Platoon SGT assigned to that unit instead of the "infantry" version. It will be corrected for the next patch.

    Steve

    Thanks Steve,

No big deal but it is annoying.

As you know, every RL Soldier is issued a helmet, regardless of assignment.

When they are on the ground they wear a helmet. (or Top will chew their ass :D )

How did this get by the...

That was my understanding as well, the helmet is the correct one. The XO and certain other officers spend most of their time in a vehicle communicating with the rest of their unit, so the CVC helmet is more practical than a combat helmet.

...ah, I see. Wrong. and laughable.

  4. There you go and IIRC the AI in the original Steel Beasts (2000) was very good at it too.

Not just within a dug in fighting position, it could use the natural terrain to find a hull down and could fight from there, "jockeying" around (to use the Australian term).

Who made the skin in that viedo jjhouston? Looks great, just like old times.

  5. Might be tough with a camo net... but try this

Make a copy of your Camo net layer (or whatever you want)

Make sure the copy is Below the original Camo net layer

Hide the original Camo net layer

Select the new layer you just made

Select from the top menu -> Filter -> Stylize -> Emboss

Play with the settings (use small values)

Un-hide the original Camo net layer

Set Blending mode of original Camo net layer to Overlay (try different options)

Adjust the Opacity/Fill of the Embossed camo net also.

OK, this isn't technicaly a "bump" map but it does the same thing, uses another image to create a false 3d effect.

Search online for tutorials and also look into the "Displace" filter (Filter -> Distort -> Displace)

To use this filter you need to save the Embossed Layer as a completely different .psd file, then import it when called for in the Displace Filter process.

I've gotten very good results using thess techniques on things like brick walls, vehicle details, uniform seams and patches, etc...

  6. The shell is how big? 35mm right?

And what is the rate of fire?

...just found this video, woah, that is much faster than I thought:

That is probably 50+ rounds in 3 sec.

What is going to happen when all those 35mm shells go through the outer armor?

What are they doing to personnel and equipment inside the vehicle?

How much metal is flying around inside that steel box?

Basic rule: if it can penetrate it is going to do plenty of damage to the soft tissue inside.

Is that considered "knocked out" :D

  7. M1 TankCommander, have you ever met any guys like that? :)

dude in my unit was from Poland, another was Scottish (good soccer player too)

On the topic of voices, one of the best mods I've downloaded is the ambient US army radio chatter and the radio chatter coming from vehicles. Obviously doesn't sound quite right when playing as red, but adds so much atmosphere when playing blue. Could BFC add something similar to Normandy? Would need a separate sound file for the Americans and Germans.

the thing is, every modern US vehicle has at least one radio, most have 2 radios.

So that constant chatter of radios you hear in the mod is a real defining memory for current vets. (one reason I worked to make it realistic yet annoying too.)

Do WW2 vets associate radio static or chatter with their experience? Would love to know.

  8. Whenever I read the back cover of a movie or game which takes place in Normandy between June and December 1944 and I spot the phrase "the toughest battle of the war" or some such, I think: "Yeah, right; tell that to Army Group Center or the defenders of Brest-Litovsk." But wait, I forgot... everything is from America's perspective.

When I first heard about CMSF, my delight that Combat Mission had become better than ever was counteracted by my disappointment that the game wasn't set in WW2. But that was largely because of my unfamiliarity with war and the tactics and the equipment thereof post 1945. Once I actually got the game, I became more familiar with the tactics and such, and that fired my interest, and since then I have done a fair amount of research about moderns weapons and military formations. Now I'm actually glad that BFC diverged from the WW2 era. That said, I'm really looking forward the CMx2 WW2 games.

Hopefully, with the recent huge surge of new investments into large PC Wargaming studios and the enormous explosion of PC Wargaming popularity overseas ,we will now begin to see many more and even better PC Wargame titles than what has been previously released by niche publishers for a tiny US market that has only spent, by rough estimate, tens of millions, on wargames alone, in the past 2 decades of the industrys existence.

As for myself, I am anxiously awaiting the deluge, a tidal wave actually, of substantial and superb (magnificent?) offerings to the PC Wargame Industry that will be sure to arrive from the continent at any moment. (once the government subsidy checks clear)

Can't wait, can't wait, giddy with anticipation...holding my breath.

  9. Remember reading once (on AGEOD board IIRC) that modern US Southern accent (IIRC South Carolina) is more similar to the American Revolution Era British accent than modern British accent is.

In other words, old time British dudes would sound similar to US southerners today because the acent hasn't evolved.

Topic came up in a discussion about Canadian French and France French.

Canadian French is considered an "old" form of French.

    Something like that, thoughts?

  10. 5.) Where are the grogs like JasonC who used to love and teach us about the intricacies of tactics and the different nation forces?

I miss the the old postings of CMx1 days when people talked tactics and how to maneuver different forces.

IIRC, something about all the old timers just not getting it and that Battlefront and the community is much better off now without them around causing trouble.

    I agree.
